Potty Training

My Daughter turned 4 in July, and was just diagnosed with hypotonia this past spring. I have known since infancy that she was not as limber as my son had been. however, my son was HUGE at birth ans has ALWAYS reached milestones way ahead of anyone. So I figured i was just comparing her to him, and maybe nothing was wrong.
Not until she went to preschool last fall a teacher noticed it, and suggested i get her looked at. So she has this, it's not severe, she speaks very well, and has has started dressing herself. POTTY TRAINING! I'm at my wits end, and only today, while I watched a 2 yr old at the YMCA who was WAY more limber than my 4yr old, did it occur to me, that perhaps it's her Hypotonia? I admit they gave me info on therapists and such, but I was in the middle of a BIG move from Vermont to Ohio. Now I am thinking i need to get her in a program. I also feel horrid for being so mad at her about potty training when maybe, she can't help it? Anything would be appreciated! :) Posted on 10/14/09, 06:10 pm |

Hi,
I live in the UK i have two grand children both have hypotonia one is six and she is fully toilet trained and was very easy, but my little grandson who is four is not potty trained he seems to know when he needs the potty but will not sit on it long enough. All i can suggest is patience and keep trying your little one will learn it just takes these children a bit longer. Take care and good luck to you, Liz UK

I have found with my son who is five and still in the process of potty training to use toys or books to keep them on the potty. My first weekend of doing it I stayed home the entire day.. I place him on the bowl every 20 minutes. I taught him first to sit.. while he would sit I had a bag of books for him to read while sitting. I created a spreadsheet to keep track of when he peed. I also had the school do the same thing. It took about a month, many accidents but it is important to be PATIENT. Also the hardest thing for them is to recognize the sensation of having to go. That takes time. In the beginning I told my son he would get ONE M&M every time he peed on the bowl and 2 for number 2 :). He is still training and seems to do a better job when he is outside of the home. Also do not use pull ups but underwear on and let them pick it out.
It will happen one day I promise!
