I am so curious to find out how many of you have bloating with this hypothyroidism. I have taken synthroid since 1988 and 3 years ago I quit taking it and actually felt better, lost 30 lbs and then I started having body aches and just didn't feel right. When I told the doctor he checked my thyroid and told me is was reading 50, in the last 6 months I have went from .50, .88 and now 1. I have went from a size 155 to now 172 and my pant size has went from 10 to 14 and they are tight. I feel like crap, I have also been depressed so now I am also on effexor and now they are wanting to send me to a gastro doctor because they say something besides my thyroid is wrong. I just don't agree with them and I told the doctor I wanted to quit taking this medicine again and she told me if I did that I could go into a coma and die. I needed to just be patient and take the medicine and watch what I eat. She doesn't believe in the natural hormones but suggested giving me a different name brand of synthroid. Am I crazy, am I making it up in my head that I am gaining weight by the day and that my stomach problems is due to something else other than these dang little pills for my thyroid. Has anyone else experienced this and has anyone ever went off of the medicine and got either better or worst? Thanks for responding.

" I started to lose weight once i started thyroxiene and it's now stable. I do now have slight IBS though which i'd never had any symptom of before and my stomach is often bloated and uncomfortable. "

" I get the bloats too; constipation. IBS too. It still seems weird to me but my endo doctor is working with me; listening to me whenever I say,"I think there is someting wrong" and she makes informed decisions with me to help make the changes necessary to get through this. Your syptoms sound classic; the aches, the weight imbalances, the depression. I hope you are working closely with an endochronologist. Hang in there lady! You are not alone out there and you are not going crazy!! "

" Thanks for all of your comments. so is the Thyroxine a generic brand? The newest symptom I have now, just this past week is high blood pressure, I've never had high blood pressure. I have not used the bathroom since Tuesday. It just seems that this is also not healthy, this thyroid medicine is causing more and more to be wrong with me. If I don't start feeling better by the end of the year I think I am going to go off of it again and see what happens to my body. That way I will know if I can live without it or not. Have any of you ever heard of someone going into a coma because of not taking thyroid medicine? "

" Though not likley it is a possibility to go into a coma. Also untreated hypothyroidism can cause heart problems high cholesterol and a whole host of other medical problems. I would not suggest going off the medication. Unfourtunatly you need to be on it for life. The risk of going off the medication does not outweigh the benefits. If anything just try another medication if itstill makes you feel crappy over the next few months. If she wont try the natural hormone, there is nothing wrong with going to another doctor. Hang in there. And again, I seriously wouldn't suggest going off the medication. "

" It sounds to me like you are still in a low thyroid state. High blood pressure and constipation are classic signs of being low thyroid. If I were you I would try a combination of Armour and a Synthetic thyroid such as Synthroid. Levothyroxine is just the name for generic Thyroid hormone. Synthetic thyroid hormone such as Synthroid, Levothyroxine, etc only contain T4. Your body has to convert the T4 to the usable form by your body which is T3. I found out that over time converting it can become harder or some people just cant do it well without added vitamins such as Riboflavin which is Vitamin B2. If you take a Natural form of thyroid hormone such as Armour it already has the same type of hormone produced by your body, so no conversion is necessary, natural thyroid has T4, T3, T2, T1 and calcitonin in it, not just the T4. My personal opinion having been on natural thyroid now for a few years is that synthetic hormones keep a lot of people in a low thyroid state. Some people find a combination of the two (natural and synthetic) to be the best though.
And yes, you really should continue on thyroid hormone for life, would you go off insulin if you were a diabetic? It is just the same, thyroid hormone really isn't like a "medication", yes its a pill but it's replacing a natural hormone your body used to be able to make and without it you get depressed, your metabolism goes down, your hair falls out, your blood pressure goes up, you can be bloated and constipated, you just feel rotten. What you need is a new MD or an ND, an ND, a Naturopath can prescribe natural thyroid, and will actually take the time to listen to all your symptoms often with an hourlong appointment. They treat the whole body, not just parts of your body and they wont whisk you away in 10 minutes like many MDs do. "

" I have Hashimotos and I had terrible bloating with synthroid and levothyroxine. But since changing to Armour Thyroid that has all gone away and I am losing the weight I gained from it too. Since I started on Prozac though the Dr. thinks my TSH level is not going down due to that medicine. "

" Okay, I'm constantly bloated also. I was sure if it was from the 10 pounds I gained or the disease. I find that I have to move around in order to keep the weight off. I am on 50 mcg of levothyroxine, it seems to be working.

I agree that doctors just want to whisk you away in 10 minutes and be done. As it is they don't know how to treat this disease and then they want to spend much time with us and don't believe the symptons were having since the nbrs show we should be feeling good.

I left a doc becuz she was just mean OR stupid for telling me that dry eyes and dry mouth was normal.

No longer energylost. :>D "

" I mentioned earlier to you to try the Armour Thyroid medicine. I could not zip my jeans either on Synthroid (Levo) and was retaining water. Call the pharmacist and ask which Drs. have prescribed Armour Thyroid and then check into them but I would see an internal med Dr. not a GP. Also, Drs. NEVER want to switch you to Armour there is more money in the Synthroid, it ia all about MONEY. Armour has been around for over 50 yrs. and is safe and works wonders. My Dr. mother lived to be almost 100 yrs. old and was always on the Armour. You will continue to feel bloated just terrible on Synthroid but all I can do is suggest this to people, most don't listen anyway. "
