Does anyone else ever feel like they are starving?

I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism (after being first misdiagnosed by my old family doctor, whom I'm no longer seeing) and I was wondering if anyone else has been encountering the same effects as I am. That is, feeling like I just can't eat enough. No matter how much I eat (I try and eat a lot of fibre and protein as I was told these would fill me up) I just end up feeling like I haven't eaten for a month. I have been told that my ravenous hunger could be caused by this or that I might possibly be diabetic. I did have blood tests done which showed both a underactive thyroid and diabetes but the doctor wants me to go for another blood test to verify the diabetes. What other side effects of the hypothyroidism have people experienced? I was feeling soooo bitchy, so depressed, no energy, and I just wanted to sleep all the time. Are these really normal side effects with hypothyroidism or is it just me?

Yes the things you described are typical of hypothyroidism. Now, as to the hunger, did you just start treatment? I know that when I started on the l thyroxine(generic for synthroid) I was starving all of the time. It lasted for a couple of weeks and eventually subsided. I just made sure to keep healthful snacks on hand so I didnt gain a ton of weight from the constant eating.
If you start reading some of the other posts here you'll see there are so many strange things your body will do as a reaction to not enough thyroid hormone. Your symptoms are pretty common. I had all of the things you mentioned above and I had muscle cramps, a tingleing feeling in my extremeties, and blurred vision. Its really different for everyone.

Hi Jessi, thank you for replying to my post. I am also on the levothyroxine (Synthroid) that you mention and I'm glad you mentioned that the symptoms do taper off within a week or so. Thanks for giving me some hope.

No I said with in a FEW weeks. Be patient though the hunger does does taper off. Like I said just keep healthy snacks around and it should stave off the weight gain :) Healthwise you should start to feel a lot better after about 4 weeks on the synthroid

Great, thanks Jessi...at least now I know that there is hope regardless how long it takes and that I won't always be feeling like this. Right now I sleep most of my life away and eat when I'm awake. I hurt so much (but I think that might also be the fibromyalgia). I have noticed though that I'm not feeling as bitchy as I was before and it's only been a couple of days. However, I am still feeling depressed (the doctor says that could be from my bipolar though). I guess it's just a waiting game right now. When you started to feel better with the levothyroxine did you start to feel less tired and less achy too? Now that the meds are working do you still have "bad days" or is it all under control? Once again, thanks for guiding me through this.

ChristineJK,
I just wanted to let you know that everything about you sounds just like me except my inability to want to eat. I believe I have also been misdiag. for a long time and had to be very very persistent with my Drs for them to test me for anything else because I just couldn't believe that FM and CFS were causing some of my symptoms, That would be hair loss, swelling and my cognitive problems that seemed to be getting worse in the past two years. They kept telling me it was due to depression ets. I kept telling them it was due to some type of autoimmune issue and I needed to find out what it was before it got to the point that I couldn't walk anymore. Now I am having a very difficult time walking without help because of pain and fatigue. I have started levothyroxine two weeks ago, but haven't felt any different, and I realize that it will take time. I, like yourself need hope that I will feel better at sometime. I have a family that I need to take care of and just bathing seems to take everything out of me. How many mg of Levothyroxine did they start you out of? She started me out of just 25 mg because my thyroid isn't enlarged and bla bla bla. I have a hard time understanding anything right now, even remembering my zip code, I think I might need my address sewn into my clothes in case I get lost when I leave the house at this point!!! I am having testing for adrenal fatigue next week and she believes that I am having a problem there also which would explain alot. I can't believe, but I am sure all of you can, that I actually want to be diagnosed with something, just so I can be treated. I would love to eat food and it taste good, everything starts to taste like mush, and I am not on any meds that would alter my appatite. Oh and the crazy bitchy thing, I have to watch my behavior and keep myself in check. It has gotten so bad that I have just stayed in on most days because it has been to much and I didn't want to go off on anyone. You know, everyone acts stupid when we have our bad days and I don't want to be the one that brings it the their attention. Thanks for listening. I hope you all have a good day, today is a, I am staying in today for the sake of mankind, day for me. Holly

I get the "hunger horrors" when my period is due, and the crazy bitchy, I think that may be the irritability that we all feel from time to time. Are you taking any calcium?
If your body feels like it needs to snack throughout the day... then let it. However, disciple yourself & snack on the right types of food. Get rid of the nasty processed foods & give your body raw fresh fruits, vegetables; like broccoli, apples, carrots...etc. Sounds awful, but your hypo body will benefit from it. love&healing

I did start to feel less tired and achy. I do seem to have some bad days still but, they are pretty infrequent. Mostly when Im sick or I'm stressed about something. Those two things really seem to affect my levels but, as I've told you before its really different for everyone. Don't get discouraged if this doesnt work right away because it sometimes will take a while to get your dosage right. You'll need to have your blood drawn more frequently in the begining. Best of luck and if you need any advice I am here for you and will do the best I can :)

If you still feel like you are going to sleep your life away, and after the few week period it persists, you possibly could have depression or bipolar disorder. I know how you feel, though. As a kid, I took the Synthroid, but now, they put me on Levothyroxine. It's different. real different.

I also feel like I want to sleep my life away. I miss so much work because of this problem. I was recently diagnosed last week, but my endo wanted another TSH test before putting me on meds. I know what you mean about finding a problem to be fixed. The first visit to my endo he said hopefully we won't find anything wrong. I said I hope you do so you can fix it. I hope these symptoms go away with meds. I'm tired of being tired.

I get really hungry when they increase my dose of Levothyroxine. I just recently read in the book "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You about Hypothyrodism" is that "Thyroid hormone can increase the need for insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents." I had a hard time since I am hypoglycemic. Since my body over produces insulin when there are any triggers for it, I had a hard time stablizing my blood sugar. I was even having dreams of having hypoglycemic attacks and had to eat many times at night. It has been about four weeks and I am doing better now.
Hey trixie, When I saw you were here now I wanted to let you know about this so you wouldn't be surprised. I have also had to adjust my adrenal medicine. Take care
