Anybody out there experiencing both at the same time?. Its hard to tell what symptoms are menopause and which are thyroid problems. Are there any books out there on that specific situation? I read that many thyroid patients are also type 2 diabetic. I am !!! The literature said that the 2 combined can contribute to more facial hair in woman. Menopause does that too!!! I will need to start waxing soon. Its already a problem for me. There's also the weight gain Issue. Mood swings, Hot flashes etc..... I'm interested in information on experiencing both at the same time. Comments anyone ?

" I am perimenopausal and hypothyroid. My docotr is treating both problems. My books say that low thyroid can aggravate other illnesses. The facial hair would indicate a testosterone imbalance. I have weight gain, but no hot flashes. Low thyroid can certainly make menopause worse, and more difficult to treat. "

" I am another one. It is very common to because hypothyroid when menopausal and after having a baby.

All hormones are so difficult to get right. I wish that I knew the answer.

I was taking HRT so no hot flushes, then I stopped HRT and don't have hot flushes now which is weird, but then again I am cold because of hypo. "

" I have hasimoto's thyroiditis and this is auto-immune the the body attacks the thyroid tissue and the ovarys and slowly forms scar tissue around them.

When I was 44 I had no more periods too much scar tissues on the ovarys right into menopause. I take estrace and prometrium (estrogin and progestrone) they are bio-identical which come from a wild yam plant. They carry them at all pharmacys expensive though, usually you have a co-pay.

Wow! did it help calmed me right down.

Take care all,
Kathy - California "

" FYI - I've been fighting to find "normal" for quite some time. I finally found a doctor that would listen and he ran numerous test on my blood. It turns out that I am slightly hyper now, and all other blood work is normal or optimal. The only thing out of whack is my Vitamim D levels, which are extremely low. After he told me this, I did some research and have found that Vitamin D Defficiency can mimic Thyroid issues. Also Vitamin D issues can surface as we age. Who knew? I started my Vitamin D today. I'm not sure how long it will take, but I'll let you know if I feel any better afer a while It would be such a relief to finally find out why I have felt miserable for so long.

Wish me luck. I'll keep you posted on my progress. "

" I too am going through both, but the scary part for me is that I am only 29 years old! It's very frustrating. Not only do we have to deal with the weight gain just from the thyroid, but then we gain it from menopause?! Then there's the hair growth, plucking and waxing. And those hot flashes and night sweats!! Uugh!

I'm not sure yet where to get more information on it, I just finally found out last week that I am for sure in perimenopause and am working with a GREAT dr now. Dr I was seeing before told me nothing was wrong with my hormones and I just needed to go to weight watchers and if I lost weight, I would stop having the hot flashes. Won't be going back there again!

Any info anyone has would be great, as it sure seems that each seem to aggravate our symptoms that much more. Good luck! "

" Got it all! Meno symptoms big style after coming off of HRT. The symptoms are so similar I don't know which to blame. And I am over -reactive so life is really yuk at the mo. I want to go back on HRT as Clonidine won't stop the hot flushes. I have a swollen midriff and am slightly more hairy than usual . I wish I'd not come off of HRT. I hope to get it all sorted once I see an Endo who will wave a magic wand and make me feel normal! "

" This is a follow up on Reply #5. The Vitamin D solved all of my issues after 10 years of misery. I feel great. I take 1000 iu's a day; one tiny little pill. "
