Low Blood Glucose and Hypothyroid

Hello again,
I was also wondering if anyone who has a hypothyroid issue also experiences low blood sugar or glucose symptoms. If I don't east every 3 or 4 hours I get it really bad. Lately, I've been feeling dizzy all day! I thought maybe it was my thyroid being off but I had it checked and they said it is fine. I swear, I just don't know what to do. I have been telling the doctors for years about how my blood sugar drops and they say all is well. I also have low blood preasure and high cholesterol! Even though I eat VERY well. I'm a mess. Thanks for replying! Holy crap a mini stroke!! You know I crave salty foods sometimes. You just explained why that probably is. Thanks! I did some research online and it said people who are hypothyroid may not trasport glucagon (hormone) enough. So how do they test for that? I'm sure my doctor will fight me on it.

Yea, when I was in the hospital is when they found the nodules and goiters and they still won't treat my thyroid, cause I am in the "normal" range I hope you have better luck with your doctors, I guess mine is waiting for my heart to stop working.

I have Reactive Hypoglycemia from Hypothyroidism. It's caused by dips in Thyroid horomone. Wikipedia - Reactive Hyoglycemia, it's lists several sub-types, one is hormomal hypoglycemia from hypothyroidism. It runs my life, I have to eat all day long, protein instead of sugar or I get sickkkkk. Welcome to the club!

I have two replies here.
PStokley: All I can say is I'm sorry you are going through this. Get another doctor ASAP!! You probably have been through many already but it will be worth it if you find one who will listen. Datagirl: Have you been tested for reactive hypoglycemia? Do they test you while you are having the symptoms? I've been tested for regular hypoglycemia and it is always normal. I always tell my doctor "I don't care what the results say, I have some time of low sugar thing going on." What really pisses me off is that I am hypothyroid and have low sugar symptoms so why wouldn't they link the two? Yeah, I get sick if I eat too much sugar at one time. Which I try to avoid most of the time.

I am officially diagnosed with Reactive Hypoglycemia and I have lost consciousness in public from it. It needs to be addressed if you have it. Basically, just eat protein snacks 5-6 per day, no sugar in the AM first. Hypoglycemia is not considered a Disease by doctors. But a condition.

I keep peanunt butter, squeeze cheeze and crackers in my desk, I know that is not the best, but it is a quick and easy fix, when I get that dizzy feeling, I am also epilepic and on meds for that, it can be tricky sometimes trying to figure out which condition is going on with me. I try my best to eat 5 to 6 small meals a day so I don't crash, that is not a good feeling. I just keep hoping that I could find an Endo that would put me on some Aurmo that would help regulate my thyroid, I was on synthroid at one time, but it did not help so that doc just yanked me off, I am no longer going to him, since him I have gone to about 4 other doc. I have receantly changed my siezure meds, they want to get that regulate right now and still want to wait and and see what happens with my goiter and nodules, doctors!!!!

Dr. Steven Lange, Thyroid Expert, has a book called "The Riddle of Illness Solved". He is an Endocrinologist that wrote this book on low Thyroid Function, he has a chapter called Hypoglycemia and Hypothyroidism (the two look alikes). He explains the thyroids relationship to blood sugar well. He says that when thyroid get low, it does not send enough thyroid horomone to the Liver which causes excessive insulin to be dumped into the bloodstream. Excessive insulin is Hypoglycemia. It's a good read.
