Levothyroxine with medical past? I feel terrible

So I have a bit of a strange medical history. When i was a child i was tiny, itty bitty really, i never even got close to the zero percent on where children are supposed to be as their growing and developing. My parents were concerned but the doctors wrote it off as just late development. At age 11 we found out i was producing little to no growth hormone so i had daily injections for 3 years and had amazing results. I have had difficulties with doctors over the past few years since i am now 21 and i haven't been able to see my childhood endocrinologists for years. The last thing my childhood doctor did a few years ago was prescribe levothyroxine and she was supposed to check it later to see how it effected me. Only problem is she never did. I stopped taking it after about a year because i could never remember to take it anyway and a blood test showed my levels being fine even though i had only remembered to take it a few days out of the past few weeks . A while ago i decided to start taking it again and man have i had some side effects. I've been on it for 2 and a half weeks or so and ive been feeling some nausea, been super cranky and very easily irritated, tired, and overall not my normal self. I dont remember this happening when i took it before. I'm so confused on whats going on. I didn't feel like i had any sort of problems before taking it besides sleeping more than usual and more than usual hair loss, and now i feel terrible. Sorry its so long but i'm just so lost...I hate not feeling like myself

Welcome!
Sorry for the reason you're here but, glad you found us. Your labs would tell a more accurate story but, it sounds like you might have resumed taking whatever dose you were taking when you stopped. If that dose was any higher than 50mcg, it was probably too much too soon since your body wasn't used to having thyroid hormone for awhile. And, it's entirely possible your thyroid condition changed so, it would be best for you to have labs before starting back up on meds. Also, most thyroid meds lose potency after a year so that could be a contributing factor as well. Since it takes easily a year for our doses/levels to be optimized, it would be best for you to be under a doctor's care to get labs/dose adjustments. Do you have any labs you'd like to share here? The best tests to evaluate thyroid function are the FreeT4 and FreeT3 tests. Sorry you're not feeling well - we'll do everything we can to help that change.

Thanks for the reply.
Wow a year...thats a long time to get things worked out! I'm on only 50mcg so I'm not sure why its affecting me so strongly. i think i'm going to try to find an endocrinologist near my area since my normal doctor seems a bit unsure on things. What are the freeT4 and freeT3 tests you mentioned? Thanks again I really appreciate it :)

Happy to help.
It actually took 15 months for my dose/levels to be optimized - a year is more common but that's only if the doctor knows what he/she is doing. Unfortunately, many people suffer much longer than necessary because many doctors don't know how to treat thyroid disease. If your regular doctor is willing to work with you, I wouldn't be in a rush to see an endo. The FreeT4 and FreeT3 tests are blood tests that measure the amounts of T4 and T3 thyroid hormones that are available for the body's use - no other T4/T3 tests provide accurate information. Without seeing your labs, it's impossible to guess why you're having troubles with 50mcg. Quite frankly, not everyone can start with 50mcg. Many of us are started on 25mcg. Was that the case for you? Did your regular doctor run any bloodwork for you before you started back on meds?

Hi! Everything Cd said is true. As far as being on the med 2 and a half weeks, this is about the time levels will start to shift. You might experience weird stuff till you straighten out. If you don't know what your labs are, how would you know what to take? Also like Cd said if you haven't taken it in a year, 50 might be too much to start with, it was for me. I have antibodies for Graves and Hashi's so my levels can change pretty quick, I've learned. See if you can get the tests Cd said. (the freeT-3 and 4. These are the most important.
