45 yo female. Ill for past 4 weeks with lethargy, fatigue, sleeping, sweaty and clammy, headaches, weakness, shortness of breath upon exertion, a mild feeling of beign choked with pain similiar to strep throat pain, heart palpitations increased (I have Mitral vale prolapse) Elevted blood pressure (am currently on BP medicine) I have a history of irregular periods, anxiety and depression.
Have been to the ER 2 x's this year for Migrane type pain and put on blood pressure meds and meds have been working until 4 weeks ago. Tested negative for H1N1 and Mono and bacterial infection. I have been exewrcising and eating healthy since Jan n09 and have lost 30 lbs. My Dr. says I may need synthroid adjustment. I was put on Synthroid 0.05 mg about three years ago when a yearly blood work test was done. Can't remember if it was Hypo or Hyper. I made an appt with my cardiologist for two weeks from now but will call him tomorrow. I'm wondering if my depression and anxiety is due to hyper/hypo. Also my mother has hyperthyroid. I'm new to this and any info is welcome. Posted on 10/14/09, 08:22 pm |

All of the symptoms you describe point to hypo and .05 is a low dose. It works for some for years, but close monitoring by your doctor is key. You may want to ask for a full thyroid panel and a thyroid antibody profile to test for Hashimoto's Autoimmune Thyroiditis given your family history. Also, since your throat feels the way it does, make sure to point this out and see if they can do a thyroid ultrasound to look for nodules or a goiter. Good luck and I hope this helps. I am not a doctor but I speak from 8 years of personal experience.

I am experiencing some of the same problems, depression and anxiety are part of my hypothyroidism. I am still in the process of adjusting medication so I don't know what my final numbers will be, but from what I am hearing, I will have to be tested for the rest of my life. I am taking levothyroxine, 50mcg a day. I thought the dosage was low but after reading other posts, maybe not. My TSH level was 11.7 when it should be between a 3 and a 5. I didn't understand the numbers at first, but after researching and chatting, I found out that the adrenal gland emits TSH to tell the thyroid gland to emit its hormones, when the thyroid does not respond, the adrenal gland secretes more TSH..see the pattern. Thats why TSH levels show what the thyroid is doing. Any level above 10 is considered hypothyroidism, and any level below a 5 I believe is considered hyperthyroidism. with hypo, there's weight gain, fatigue, depression, etc. with hyper, the main difference is weight loss.
I wish you luck with this, its not easy. I am trying to be positive but this has been a difficult illness to manage for me.
