Synthroid side effects

I was diagnosed 3 weeks ago with hypothroidism. My doctor put me on 50 mcg Levothyroxine once daily. I have felt nervous and jittery, irritable and increasingly depressed. I have had very slight tinnitus for 10 years, but about a week ago it became very pronounced ( constant loud ringing). Does anyone know if if the Levothyroxine could be responsible for this increase in my tinnitus. I ask my doctor and he said that the medication would not cause this problem to get worse.I would very much appreciate anyones insight .

" I was diagnosed three years ago. The doctor started me on 125mcg Levothyroxine and I had all of what you discribed. In addition, I had heart palpitations and my breathing was hard. My doctor also said that the medicine was not causing any of it.

Since May, I have been taking a Levothyroxine that is compounded for me with a time release. Most of the side affects of the medicine have gone away. Although, I still have a little bit of the tinnitus, it is at least much better than before. "

" Yes, I have the ringing in my ear(s) I think it started this summer. I thought it was maybe due to something else-- I have a chronic case of clenching my teeth at night. I used to grind my teeth(bruxism)also. I believe Dr. Oz covered this on Oprah or his show. Some days the ringing is worse --I think it's worse in one ear, it's hard to tell. I don't hear it when I'm concentrating on something --only when I try to relax It becomes irritating.
I am also on 50 mcg of levothyroxine. All of the symptoms have disappeared except for feeling lethargic. Before the symptoms occurred I had Tons of energy. "

" I have had a loud right ear for 20+ years, six months ago it became the sound of crickets in both ears. When I finally sit down at the end of the day, it is like stepping outside on a warm summer evening. LOUD CRICKETS! I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 4 years ago. For 6 weeks I felt wonderful on medication then I went into feeling lethargic, being cold all the time and my hair falling out. The endocrinologist tells me every 12 months that I'm on the right dosage but I never get better. So the crickets are just about the last straw. I'm glad you posted this, I had not thought about it being related to hypothyroid. I have 2 other overlapping auto-immune disorders and I am miserable. "

" Hi Parrotguy, I would get a second opinion on whether your medication dosage is the right amount for you. The symptoms of being jittery and irritable may be caused by too much levothyroxine. You are on a low dosage, but I would see an endocrinologist or a thyroid specialist.

I also have ringing in my ears. I don't know if that is related to thyroid disease. I think I have had it all my life. I don't have it all the time, but do notice it frequently enough.

I really had trouble and felt awful until I got my dosage right and that was after seeing an endocrinologist. I hope you start feeling better soon. It took me a year to get it right and to be feeling almost normal. I was diagnosed in 02'. "

" I have been taking generic synthroid since July. I started at 25mcg and noticied a few side effects such as headache, anxiety and diarherra. Only lasted a week, then I was fine. After a month I was upped to 50 mcg and only noticied headache and some blurred vision. Recently I was upped to 75 mcg and really had bad anxiety, insomnia, irritablily, heart palpataions, and blurred vision, chest pain, alot of hyper signs. Backed back down to 50mcg. still had the blurred vision, chest pain, and headache, worried that it was raising my blood pressure to much, I called the Dr. and we backed it down to 37.5mcg. I still have a slight headache, but blurred vision is gone, I feel much better. This med really does need to be fine tuned! "
