Hi All,

Hope everyone is doing fine.
A little background about my condition. I was diagnosed with hyperthyroid last year and in the beginning of this year i took the radio iodine test and a month after that i had very severe hypothyroid symptoms like fatigue, muscle cramps etc and my TSH was 104. I went to a primary care physician(i couldn't get appointment for any Endo) he started me with Levothyroxine 75, then after a month synthroid 112, and now 2 weeks back my TSH was 15 he increased the dosage to synthroid 125.

My symptoms are getting a lot better, but iam losing a lot of hair. Everytime i shower or comb i have a bunches of hair in my hand. Atlast i was able to get an appointment with a Endo , i asked him about my hair loss problem he said its normal and it should grow back. I also asked him about the Armour thyroid he strongly rejected it saying its poorly manufactured and standardized. Iam not sure what to do . Because other then my hair fall i don't have any other symptoms i had before.
Also my T3 total and T4 total values are well within the range only TSH is out of range. Can someone please advice me whether i should switch to Armour thyroid.

Also can i start using Rogaine, did someone find that effective. What if my normal hair started growing and i stop using rogaine even my natural hair will start falling.

One last question , iam only 27 years old, is this natural for someone my age to have this problem. My parents/grand parents don't have this problem , its just me that's what makes me worried more.

Please advice.

" Can the pharmacy supply you with a list like that? I like your style. You have handled this seemingly impossible task with the ease of a professional! I, too, am looking for a more innovative endo than this one I went to. "

" Thanks for the compliment. I am just a pretty stubborn person and have learned to take my health into my own hands after I found out so many Drs. just don't listen. They probably don't like me, but that is too bad---I want to have a quality life.

Yes it is legal for the pharmacy to give you a list because they are not giving you any patient names or their information. Sometmes internal medicine Drs. can help. It depends on how open they are to different treatments. Just stay determined and keep calling pharmacists to get names of Drs. Actually it is to their benefit for them to help you---then possibly if you go to one of the drs. they tell you about you will maybe come to their pharmacy. They would like that ! =) "

" Hi Everyone,

As a note, armour thyroid used to be the only thing available. Synthroid came after. Scientists learned that the enzymes that break T4 into T3 coat all of the blood vessels and it is a very easy process.

If you feel better on it, then you are doing what works for you.

I use a shampoo for thinning hair... etc. I just got my levels rebalanced and my hair is growing back and people comment on how thick it is looking.

It's not an age thing... I was 12 when diagnosed and I just turned 30.

When TSH is elevated, it means your thyroid hormone is low. It is an inverse relationship. The numbers are on a logarithmic scale - in terms of the math. That means 10 isn't double 5. Its much closer. You are getting on track and your doctor is calibrating your meds gently and zeroing in.

It is likely that you would learn that some family members have had this. My great grandmother did, my grandfather did, and my grand mother had a different thyroid issue. It becomes second nature, so people probably don't talk about this so much.

Keep adjusting your meds until they are right and you feel better as well. Your hair will grow back, it will have more shine than it does right now. As long as you are on the right track, things will improve by themselves.

I bought rogaine before. I've just adjusted my meds and my hair came back itself.

Take it easy, stay the course, this is a common and manageable condition and you sound like you are exactly on the right track.

I am at 112 - I was taking 125 before, but I'm slowly adjusting down right now. I'll have my follow-up bloodwork in a few weeks.

Keep on keeping on.

" Ben----that is not true. Synthroid is a synthetic medicine that your body does not absorb as well as Armour which is natual. There are many medicines that come out for the MONEY reason. That does not make them better than older medicines just more costly. You are playing chemistry with your body. Also----I can take T4 forever and my body DOES NOT make it into T3 which is the problem with alot of people. A synthetic will never be absorbed in the body better than a natural ingredient.

The hair thinning is from Synthroid---people on Armour do not lose their hair.

Unless you have tried both Armour and Synthroid don't make a comment that Synthroid is better---I have tried them both and so have others that come on here. If you have been using Synthroid since you were 12 yrs old and are still adjusting it and losing hair obviously you need to switch because it is not working for you. "

" I'm sorry that you are struggling in such a way. Being so young & loosing your hair is bad for any woman. Unfortunately, our hypo disease knows no age limit.

I struggle with the hair problem, although I did not resort to Rogaine, I made sure that I stopped OVER TREATING my hair so as to not stress it out. It will grow back.

In the meantime... learn to manage your own stress & your symptoms.

" Hi I just wanted to let you know about a wonderful hair product that I have been using. I was losing so much hair that I filled up a baggie in 4 days. My hair stylist ordered me a product called Nioxin. It is great. I have been using it for almost 2 months now and my hair loss has slowed and I have alot of new hair growth. Hope this helps : ) "

" Just a little vent. I am so happy that Armour works so well for so many people, I assume its a great drug. I will say though not to discount synthroid or other medications. It sure seems to work great for me. Ihavent felt this well in years and have had no side effects. I am happy though that so many people have found releif with the Armour. "
