Hi All,
Hope everyone is doing fine. A little background about my condition. I was diagnosed with hyperthyroid last year and in the beginning of this year i took the radio iodine test and a month after that i had very severe hypothyroid symptoms like fatigue, muscle cramps etc and my TSH was 104. I went to a primary care physician(i couldn't get appointment for any Endo) he started me with Levothyroxine 75, then after a month synthroid 112, and now 2 weeks back my TSH was 15 he increased the dosage to synthroid 125. My symptoms are getting a lot better, but iam losing a lot of hair. Everytime i shower or comb i have a bunches of hair in my hand. Atlast i was able to get an appointment with a Endo , i asked him about my hair loss problem he said its normal and it should grow back. I also asked him about the Armour thyroid he strongly rejected it saying its poorly manufactured and standardized. Iam not sure what to do . Because other then my hair fall i don't have any other symptoms i had before. Also my T3 total and T4 total values are well within the range only TSH is out of range. Can someone please advice me whether i should switch to Armour thyroid. Also can i start using Rogaine, did someone find that effective. What if my normal hair started growing and i stop using rogaine even my natural hair will start falling. One last question , iam only 27 years old, is this natural for someone my age to have this problem. My parents/grand parents don't have this problem , its just me that's what makes me worried more. Please advice. Posted on 09/02/09, 08:09 am |

This is a fairly commen condition and age really doesn't matter. It is typically hereditary and since this is such a vastly underdiagnosed condition it could be that you have had some older family members who have had it but, it was just undiagnosed or, you may just be the ,"lucky one" who gets it out of the clear blue.
I don't have a lot to offer in terms of the hair loss. Its just not a problem I have delt with. I know you were unable to get an appointment with the endo but, I would highly suggest it. I beleive that hair loss is a temporary side effect of synthroid but, it is also indicitive of thyroid disease so, it could mean your levels are not where they should be. An endo, if you find a good one, would be the best bet in terms of getting you well. I have also heard a lot of good things about holistic doctors and natropaths. If you take time to read thru these posts you will find a great deal of useful information and I know that there are a lot of posts about hair loss, you may find some help by doing that as well. Good luck and I am glad to hear aside from the hair loss, that you are feeling better.

I had Rai in 2004 and started going hypo 6 months later. My hair fell out quite bit too, because of changing hormone levels.
I monitor my bloodpressure, pulse, body temperature. Hang in there, this can also cause depression.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. But i would like to know if i change to armor thyroid from synthrod will stop my hair loss problem. Or i should wait for my TSH to fall within the normal range then check for any improvements. Also one more question, iam not married but planning to soon. Will my children have the same problem later on or they may not? Please let me know. Thanks,

From my personal experience, I was on Levothyroxine (Synthroid) for two years and my TSH stayed in the 1-3 range, but my symptoms didn't go away completely, although they did improve. I was still fatigued, my hair was falling out in handfuls, etc. My doctor put me on Armour and within a couple of months the hair loss greatly diminished and now is normal, as long as I keep my dosage correct.

Hey Jartan, I'm on levothyroxine 50 mcg. All of the symptoms stopped as soon as I took the meds. I only experience sluggishness. My nbrs r also 1-3 range. My hair use to fall out a lot, even if I didn't comb it. It stopped falling out.
Statistics say your offspring has a 50/50 chance of getting this disease. I believe I got the info from the American Thyroid Assoc (ATA). Be aware of what "they think the causes are" I don't know if they have any proof on this. I recently learned to ask for a collar (dentist) if getting x-rays for the upper body to protect the thyroid. Avoid floride due to it may cause damage to the thryoid. Countries deficient in iodine this disease is common, but the USA doesn't have lack of iodine in our diet. Check out the ATA web site for more info. I'm sure your hair will stop falling out soon. Take care 8>)

I'm taking levoxyl and have so much hair loss that I wonder why I'm not bald by now. My endo doesn't like armour or levothyroxine so I seem doomed to continue with the hair loss as long as I stick with him. It appears that we have to shop around for a specialist in this area, we need someone with specific expertise in only the thyroid.

I am totally sold on Armour Thyroid---Drs. tell patients not to use it because they don't get any kickbacks from it. It is alot cheaper than Synthroid. I was on Synthroid for one year and it made me so bloated, my hair started thinning too and it did not treat the depression. The Armour is very hard to get right now but I have been on it now for about 3 mos and feel 100% better, it has the T3 that you need in it. I just wish they would step up the production of it. I have a feeling after calling the company that because it is so cheap and the company Forest Pharmaceuticals makes more money on the other drugs they create so are dragging their feet about making the Armour. This is just my opinion of the shortage of it. Best Wishes to you...

Another VERY good bit of advice...I called the pharmacy and asked them of a list of all the physicians that prescride Armour Thyroid. Then I researched them to see what colleges they attended and if they were board certified or not also their age. Not too young but not too old either. Then I made my choice and it was a good one, my Dr. is very open to try new approaches to treating things. He is an internal medicine Dr.---we have no endos in our area at all.
