Hi, this is my first time in this group, I am a member of the narcolepsy group. I have had hypothyroidism for about 8 years, and have been controlled very well with medicine. About a 8-10 weeks ago I noticed my hair was falling out, so I called my doctor and set up to have a thyroid panel done. Her office called back in a few days and said all levels were good. I was also getting very tired, and since I was going to the doctor for a narcolepsy follow up, I wanted to be sure it wasn't my thyroid causing the fatigue. About 8-10 days ago, I noticed a swelling in the left side of my neck, near the front, I wasn't to concerned about it, because I had an ear infection, and figured it was from that. On Monday I noticed that the swelling was still there and seemed to be a bit larger, I called my doctor and left a message, thinking still that this was infection, her office called back, and told me they set me up an appointment for today for a thyroid ultra sound, and then I was to come to their office and have a TSH and T4 run, which I did all of that. Later this afternoon, her office called and said that my ultra sound showed activity, and that they had me set up with an appointment for tomorrow with an Otolaryngologist. I asked what activity meant, and I was told it could be anything from an enlarged thyroid to a tumor. I am really scared because in my mind, if you are referred to a specialist and gotten an appointment that quickly it is bad. Can anyone give me some insight in this?

Hi,it might be a goiter, which is another name for swollen thyroid.I know you are nervous and hopefully not too serious.
Do you have the results for the ft4 and ft3 tests? I have had doctors think that as long as your numbers are all in range,it's okay.Mine have to be in the upper part of the ranges. Please keep us posted.I've had thyroid problems for 20 years.

Yes---you need to get TSH, Free T3 and Free T4. The Free T3 is the active part that your thyroid needs. Those totals should be in the higher range. It does take about 4-6 wks for the totals to register correctly after starting medicine though. Try to the buy the book or get it from the library called; Living Well With Hypothyrodism by Mary Shomon. It does explain alot in it about the tests, etc.
