Okay I was told I had hypothyroidism. So I took a trip to the doctor which happens to be my family doctor for treatment. I ask him about my swollowen ankles which have been this way for years but the bigger they get now the more they hurt... He said it's my thyroid and gave me pain killers for it.... I'm just wondering does anyone else suffer from swollen feet/ankles cause by hypothyoidism?

I know how "bottom" things can get. It's hard.
What is your Dr's next move for you. Whatever it is... family Dr or not... don't be afraid to get a second opinion. Keep educating yourself & your Dr about you.

Hey Man, just take it easy a little and learn a bit at a time here.
I was diagnosed when 12 and I am now 30. So, it's not an age thing. I don't like how your doctor worded it to you. I do not see getting meds right as a guessing game. In chemistry, the process would be called, "titration." You test a little, find out its a little low... raise it a little... not enough... raise it a little bit more." Its less about guessing, more about zeroing in. You are going back in six weeks because thryoid hormone replacement - which is what synthroid is - builds up in your system over a month or two. So, that daily dose isn't like taking tylenol that leaves your system in four hours. It also isn't like taking a drug to kill a bacteria. You are literally replacing a hormone that your thyroid is no longer making correctly. What is wrong with you, is you have a condition where your body is fighting with itself a little. Your pituitary gland - which creates growth hormone... etc, is trying to get your thyroid to produce a little more hormone and it won't. This creates sort of a self defeating cycle. So, you're taking some replacement hormone, things will level out, and you'll be balanced and far healthier when they do. You'll have to keep testing every six months to every year because things will change a little here and there. No big deal. Chill on your Dad a little. My Grandfather and Great Grandmother didn't choose this, wouldn't have wanted to pass it on to me, but its just the way it is. Here is how I see it. You are diagnosed right now. That is a great thing. That means you were suffering before for reasons unknown. Right now you are taking steps that will make your healthier, stronger, more mentally alert, and you'll get a lot of your other issues in life in order. When my thyroid is off... sometimes I have zero appetite whatsoever. I have to force myself to eat, or have someone remind me. You'll likely have an easier time with your other issues as your meds adjust. Your thyroid controls many body functions and your metabolism. As you get it right, which is what you are doing right now, life gets much better. Hang in there - keep learning. Read lists of the symptoms online. Those symptoms should slowly disappear one by one and your life gets better. Ben
