I'm on 2,500mg extra calcium and Calcitriol (same thing as Rocaltrol). Seems to be pretty balanced in the last six months anyway.

Hello,
I had parathyroidectomy on 9/11 to remove one of the glands. They did not start me on calcium but sent instructions for if I have numbness or tingling. Is that what it feels like to have a low calcium level? My calcium has been" high "due to the overactive parathyroid gland. I hope to have cured my problem but worried that I might have to deal with low calcium issues now. Thanks, Anne FinCastle

I'm not health professional, so I don't want to say "yes, that's what it means". What I can tell you is that when my calcium levels dip down, I start feeling numbness and tingling in my legs, hands and face. I believe that' s called Tetany. I just got my results back for my calcium and it's 8.3 (normal is 8.5-10.7). The doctor likes it a little low because it's easier on the kidneys I believe. I'm going to up my intake to 3,000 three times a day though. I feel better when my calcium is a little higher.
Anne, there are four parathyroids. Removing one, the damaged one, should not have affected your other three and your body can work well on just ONE parathyroid. If you get numbness or tingling, your remaining parathyroids could have suffered shock, but will go back to being normal in a couple of months. Usually though, hypocalcemia is felt within 24 hours of surgery.

Hello,
I am feeling better today after munching on a few tums. I've added calcium rich foods back into my diet as well. Friday is the date to draw blood for calcium levels and return vist with my surgeon is on Monday. I actually feel so much better than before the surgery and want so much to be done with all the worries. I've always enjoyed good health, took that for granted but never will again. Have you had good care from family doctor or specialist? Not sure what to expect from the surgeon as far as after care. Thank so much for being there and sharing! :-) Anne
