Advice:
Can I live ok with two parathyroid glands?

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and I'm hoping someone can answer my question. I had the right lobe of my thyroid removed 4 weeks ago and in the pathology report it showed two mirco parathyroid glands. The surgeon told me he didn't think he had touched them but agreed the report wouldn't lie. He also said there is no way of knowing if I lost both or if one was cut in two pieces. It's been a real awakening concerning my surgeons skill with this type of surgery to say the least!

I see now my Endo is ordering calcium levels with I get my blood drawn next time. My question is will I have to be medicated if I lost two of the glands or can I live ok with the other 2-3? Someone Please Help me? Juli

" Hi Juliva,
You can live without those 2 parathyroids. You only need one good one to keep you going. But, you need to have your PTH levels tested to make sure the remaining parathyroids weren't damaged as well.
I had 5 parathyroids. They took out 3 during two different surgeries. They also compromised the blood flow to the 2 remaining parathyroid glands. So, I am devastated at the state I have been left in. I am now surgically hypoparathyroid. They also damaged a vocal cord while they were in there. I've heard of a damaged parathyroid regenerating over as long as 10 years after surgical damage. I'm hopeful, sort of, but it's a long shot and it's only happened to a couple of people.
Just make sure they monitor your PTH. Hang in there and just do the best you can! "

" My surgeon dissected the best one out of the 'most aggressive' tumor he had ever seen. He said blood was compromised and I could not have any calcium until my blood levels went up .01 and it was more stress than the surgery. Did they cut off the blood to your arm witha blood pressure cuff and wait until you went into tetany? so painful! I still have full body tetany but rare 5 months after surgery and believe I will make it on one wounded parathyroid. And I can take calcium for problems now of course. The body is a miraculous healer. I have little chance of survival and only motivator is to out smart Kaiser. I do my best to stay positive and appreciate any advice. "
