Testosterone and Androgel Question

OK, so here is the situation...my boyfriend is 38 years old, and he takes Androgel due to low testosterone. My confusion is, I was under the impression that when a man has low testosterone, his sex drive is low. My boyfriend is the exact opposite, even when he went months without using Androgel. Could this be?
And, when he uses the Androgel, I have noticed that he is a bit edgy compared to normal...is that normal?? I appriciate any suggestions, or websites, or anything anyone has to offer... Also, with lowered testosterone, does it make conceiving a baby more difficult, or even impossible??? THANKS ALL! Posted on 06/19/10, 10:16 pm |

Hey Tammy
Not sure how to answer the question about sex drive. From what I undestand it is hit and miss. I guess it all depends how long he has been androgen deprived. As far as being edgy yes testosterone has been known to make people more aggressive. Especially as the body is getting use to the higher androgen levels. The opposite is true to I have heard people become more happy once their testosterone levels hit where they should be. From what i understand it is highly dependant on each person. Well low testosterone in some cases have been known to decrease fertility. Also not many docs tell patients but the use of testosterone can shut the HPT axis down resulting in temporary infertility. I hope this helps.

Hi
I started on Androgel, and there was a fluctuation in my mood and libido. I stopped using it because I would forget to put it on, and because of the transfer issue. Mostly because of the transfer problem. Although women do produce testosterone, their levels are way lower than for men. It does not take much for a woman to absorb some T from her partner’s skin, and I did not want my wife to grow a better moustache than me, LOL. I opted for an injection once a week that I give myself. There are longer acting injections too, like once a month, but I understand they are not as consistent as the weekly ones, and it is difficult to keep testosterone levels in a tight range. There are patches for those afraid of needles that help minimize the transfer problem because you can see where they are and avoid that area, but I have never used them, so I can’t say more than that. My mood and libido still fluctuate, but not nearly as much as before. More like normal I would suppose.

Me again
My wife and I are thinking of starting a family. I have been on T for over a year and also had questions about fertility too. First off your partner needs to find out if his hypogonadism is primary or secondary. If primary then the chances are that he is sterile increase a lot. If it is secondary then it stands to reason that his problem is with his pituitary gland and not his testicles. Thus he is able to produce sperm. But, being on testosterone alone will cause the testes to decrease the amount of sperm production, and over a long enough time period, like many years, will eventually stop producing altogether. There is a drug called Novaril that when taken will tell the testicles to produce testosterone. It will also tell them to make sperm. The problem is it is very expensive and thus only used for short periods while trying to conceive. Hopes this helps.

I am sorry...I have not been on in a while, but I wanted to thank you, thank, for your education! You have given me a lot to look into!
So, I wonder if his issue is secondary, that could be the reason for his high sex drive...hmmm...got a lot to talk to the doctor about! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! Tammy
