As my son is feeling better, he mentioned to me that he believes now that his blood sugar levels were low while he was sleeping at night, causing him to miss out on his REM sleep. He is now getting his REM sleep every night, making a huge difference in how he feels.
I thought I'd bring this up in case anyone feels this could be happening to them. Just a thought, maybe eat something at bedtime that will last a while: beans or something with cornstarch in it (?) if your body can handle something that heavy just before bed... We're still trying to figure out why my son's symptoms suddenly went away. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? He's wondering if his insulin level may still be too high, but that his body has learned to compensate. But how could it change so suddenly? Posted on 09/23/09, 08:09 pm |

I'm not exactly sure what is classified as REM sleep, but since I've been on the hypoglycemic diet I have dreams nightly (not bad). I eat a protein (with no carb) right before bed each night.

If my sugar is low overnight, not only do I not get REM sleep, I can't sleep at all. If it dips, I find I start to get that jittery agitation associated with my swings, and there's no way I can get back to sleep unless I get up for a nibble (which is super annoying). Cereal with decent amount of fiber has helped before bed, or even a little if/when I wake up from low sugar has been helpful to me personally.
A lot of things cause this dip overnight for me, but I notice it especially if I happen to get a workout in an hour or so before bedtime, and don't eat enough to keep my sugar up. Or, if I had an early dinner and happened to be up late reading or something. So who knows? Maybe he made a subtle lifestyle change that worked your son's favor?
