Tired and confused after one hour or so sitting

Hi all

I am a reactive hypoglycemia sufferer since i was ten.

I am a student; in this period, when I sit down in the afternoon to study, after one hour or so I feel tired and confused. It is not exactly like a classic hypoglycemia attack, since studying while standing up (I mean, not sitting down) allow me to avoid that umpleasant feeling. Have you ever experienced anything like this? Have you ever read or listened about similar cases?

Moreover, what is your typical diet?

Here is mine:
no breackfast;
lunch: tuna, green salad, a little bit of whole bread
no afternoon snack;
dinner: same as lunch.

Whatever I eat on breackfast,even protein or fat, just stick into my stomach and make me drowsy and tired.
Often, before going to bed, I take another little dinner, with salad.
So far, this is the diet that worked best. Also, I take a vitamin/minerals supplement on regular basis.

Thank you for your help

" I've never experienced this problem, but the thought that comes to mind is that, while sitting, your circulation may get a little sluggish, Maybe if you took just 2 or 3 minutes and walked a bit, get a drink, or whatever, that it might avoid this, as you would be getting more oxygen & food to your brain.

Is there some reason that you don't have snacks between meals? Many (most?) hypos do better with a small snack (nuts, maybe, or string cheese). Nothing elabrate, and easy to carry in your purse or backpack.

Another thing that I noticed - you are getting very few carbs (only a little bread) and you need complex carbs for energy. Your body really needs all three: protein, complex carbs, and good fats (Olives, olive oil, nuts/seeds, etc.). To keep your wonderful human machine going, it needs FUEL (pronounced proper food) to keep it going.

I sure hope this helps you, my friend. "

" You are not getting enough calories!!! I weigh 109 lbs., and I cannot function without 4 times the calories you are describing!! You need complex carbs (to fuel your brain), and you need to experiment with different breakfast choices until you find something that works. Try apple with peanut butter, protien cereal, low carb oatmeal, bacon and eggs, cottage cheese. Try a burger with no bun for lunch, or chicken - your body needs variety, and calories!!! "

" First of all, thank you for you reply.

I don't have snack between meals beacause just the very act of digesting something have some consequences on my mind. Obviously, when I eat refined carbs (which now I absolutely avoid)I feel very bad; however, when I eat protein- and fat-based meal, I don't have the classic hypoglycemic symptoms no more, but some other light symptoms like un uncomfortable sense fullness. Prokinetics drugs seems to help me, but do not solve completely the situation. "

" I researched the prokinetics drugs, and from what I read, it seems to me that several very small meals/snacks should eliminate that problem, with NO SIDE EFFECTS. I've heard this described as "grazing" all day long - just a few nibbles at a time, to avoid the over-full feeling and GERD problem. Think this would possibly work for you? "

" I do that "grazing" thing a lot. I keep a couple shelves in my pantry full of "munchies" at all times so that I can have a snack here and there when I need it. Just a handful of rice snacks or something when I start to feel dizzy. "

" I find that I notice how bad I'm feeling all at once when I stand up after sitting for awhile. When I am low, I get that "standing up too fast" sensation that involves fuzziness in front of my eyes whenever I stand up. I have often had problems studying in the afternoon because an hour or two after lunch, I often get low.

Have you ever had a drink or two while sitting and then stood up to notice that you were a lot more tipsy than you thought you were when you were sitting? It's a lot like that for me. I know you said snacking doesn't seem to work for you, but maybe you just need to experiment with the type of snacks. Cheese and whole grain crackers? Mixed nuts? Edamame? Greek yogurt? These things are essential to my well-being and you might give snacking another shot, since so many people with hypoglycemia find it an essential part of their diet.

I don't know how you can skip breakfast! I eat a light breakfast of a low-carb cereal (Kashi Heart to Heart or similar) or a bit of granola and yogurt, and I am ALWAYS starving a couple of hours later. I find that heavy breakfasts with lots of oils or proteins can leave me feeling queasy as well, but I could not survive without some protein and carbs (from whole grains) in the morning. "

" I'm also diagnosed Reactive Hypoglycemic. Although I still have many struggles, I find that a solid breakfast like Oat Bran with an All Bran Rusk helps me just to get going. My body is quite weak - so just getting dressed in the morning tires me. This breakfast then keeps me from "blacking out", which I easily do. I'm usually hungry by 10:00 (breakfast was at 07:30), when I'll have a fruit salad with yoghurt, for the rest of the day I go through the normal lunch, snack, dinner and then small snack - all just to keep me going.

It takes a while to settle into eating - I used to eat Rice Krispies for breakfast, 2 biscotti for lunch, and then a healthy dinner - did not help! "

" Rice Krispies, Biscotti, Fruit Salad!!??? Hypoglycemics need PROTIEN and small amounts of fat, especially in the AM hours. Also, there seems to be a stomach disorder going on here, if the though of eating makes you sick. Please discuss your symptoms with an Endocrinologist. "
