Hypoglycemia causes me to be mega-irritable and cranky. I get anxious and even depressed...
I start feeling good if I eat right and for some dumb reason, I cheat and eat a cinnamon bun or something...and then it takes about a week or so just to start feeling normal again. I would try Proglycim or something, but I'm afraid side-effects would be bad.

My son is severely hypoglycemic and has been treated for depression for that last several years. Blood sugar and brain function are very closely related. It is unfortunate that Doctors only treat for their specialty and rarely put all the puzzle pieces together. The Endocrinologist who is currently evaluating me at the Mayo Clinic told me this. I have not had mental problems, but my brother and son have suffered so much, and we are determined to solve the mystery for my son's well being. Good luck to you.

I've been diagnosed with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Anorexia Nervosa, and Major Depression. I don't think I mean the criteria for any of them anymore.
I was first diagnosed as hypo when I had anorexia.

BAB09, did you see my comments on the genetic link for some forms of hypoglycemia? It would be so important for you to have your son and brother's blood drawn to see if there was a familial genetic problem, and then get on an appropriate treatment/diet.
The irony is that for most hypoglycemia, the frequent protein is helpful to decrease the sugar highs and lows: but in some forms of hyperinsulinism, protein prompts even more drastic lows. It's worth looking intol.
