i have insomnia, which contributes to my migrains and hypoglycemia, and so i went to my headache doctor (yes, i FINALLY found one who specializes in headaches) and he put me on something...i believe it was rosarum(spelling?)...but it worked REALLY well. but our insurance company said that they wouldn't pay for it unless i tried two other sleeping medications first. so i just got lunesta. have any of you read the side effects? people get addicted to it, and start sleep walking. people have even been known to have sex and not know it. this medicine is crazy. :S
but anyway. does anyone else have sleep issues? do you notice if it effects your hypoglycemia and headaches (if you get headaches because of your hypo)? Posted on 06/29/09, 08:06 pm |

Hypoglycemia causes sleep issues. If you are not eating correctly which throws your blood sugar stability off, it causes your adrenals to overreact. The adrenalin hit a few hours after you fall asleep wakes you up and it is hard to get back to sleep. Also, hypoglycemia causes bad headaches. If you eat correctly for hypo, your headaches and sleep issues should go away.

oh yes, whenever i'm not eating right i get really bad insomnia. i'll be up until 3 or 4 and then have to get up. i toss and turn. its wonderful to hear that this is actually something other ppl with hypo go through. whenever i don't get sleep also its like i get bipolar or something, my moods are up and down.

Britni, could you give us some idea of what your diet is like? Also the spacing of your meals/snacks? Have you cut out all caffein (sodas, tea, coffee, chocolate, etc)? Do you eat some protein just before retiring at night? A boiled egg, or cottage cheese, etc., just before bedtime will help carry you thru the night.

HSTAR, my diet is no caffein, NO SUGAR AT ALL, whole grain or whole wheat breads only, lots of protein, lots of veggies (except corn), very few fruits. i always eat a couple sticks of string cheese every night at ten, then try to got the bed. it never works. like last night, i was up, so at midnight i just decided to get up and watch television and draw until i got sleepy...i didn't go to bed until 1:30 in the morning and had to get up at 7:30.

You should try cutting out the whole wheat/grain bread for a while and see if you feel better. I can only eat it in very limited quantities. Try protein and non-starchy vegetables only for a week or so. Make sure you eat at the correct intervals which is just as important as what you eat, maybe every 2 hours.

15yrhypo, thats impossible. there is barely anything left to eat. and the more a limit my food, the more likely i am to develop an alergy.

Not impossible at all! Since becoming (or realizing I am) hypo, I've HAD to drop all grains and starches (the good ones, as well as the bad) to keep my blood sugar stable. I feel great most of the time now, and get plenty to eat - only eating proteins, veggies, nuts and dairy (in my case, goat diary, due to allergy to cow milk products).
I second the suggestion to try going without the grains for a time and see how you feel.

3 mg. of Melatonin at bedtime helps my family with sleep problems, and it can also be taken with valerian root. Both are herbal and non addictive. I agree with the others about a protein snack at bedtime. Is stress keeping you up at night? If so, you may need cognitive behavioral therapy techniques to relax so you can sleep. There's also the usual chamomile tea, warm bath before bed, etc. My insurance company also just rejected my son's prescription for Roseran. the other sleep meds have scary side effects ( we saw this 1st hand when my son was on ambien ), and we have decided to stay away from them. Good luck with getting some sleep.
