i am so sick of this diet. i feel like my parents aren't being very supportive of it. i know it sounds stupid, but like when we go to parties and stuff, i have to just sit there and eat nothing because i can't have it, and they eat cake and icecream and everything right in front of me. i don't understand it. and it sucks. i'm a fifteen-year-old girl, and i can't have a cake (one that tastes good anyways) on my birthday. but this diet that i'm on (no sugar, only whole wheat or whole grain breads, no caffine, very little fruit) just isn't working for me. the food tastes disgusting. and i still get migrains occasionally.

" I totally understand how hard it is for you and at such a young age. You feel like your in a world by yourself at times and with such limitations on what you can eat. Family and friends sometimes don't understand how lonely and difficult it is to be around others enjoying any foods they like. I'm much older than you and still find it hard to stay within those guide lines. I've learned that when attending parties or something social. I always bring my own goodies and enough to share if anyone likes. My favorite sweet treat without the artificial sugar, is mixed berries with a heaping tablespoon of sugar free cool whip on top. When I need a chocolate fix I buy sugar free Carob pops. "

" Britni - many people don't realize the emotional turmoil caused by a diet like you are learning to live with. Explain to your parents how it makes you feel, and how it hurts to just sit there like a bump on a log, when everyone else is having a good time. It hurts!!

Ask your mom to visit your local library and check out several Diabetic Cookbooks. She should be able to find recipes for cakes, cookies, and other desserts using substitutes for sugar. As an example, I just looked at a recipe for Crepes filled with Cottage Cheese & Strawberries. It sounds really good!!

By the way, Stevia (also being advertised as Truvia on TV) is a much better substitute choice because it is a natural product, but I also use Splenda in my baking.

If you have desserts available, you can take your own when you go out with the gang or your family. I bet she can even come up with a birthday cake for you!! Oh, and by the way, you need to learn to make your own sugar free goodies, also!! After all, the success of your diet (and better health) is in YOUR HANDS!!

We are all pulling for you, and wish you best of health !! "
