" Hi, I am a home care nurse who took care of a set of twins with a rare disease called Congenital Hyperinsulinism of Infancy. It has also been called Nesidioblastosis, or Persistant hyperinsulinism hypoglycemia of infancy.

It is characterized by low blood sugars, and usually elevated insulin levels. The interesting part of the newest research is that they are identifying genetic links for this disease, and finding it in older people. There is a type of CHI that includes hyperammonia; those people tend to react to leucine in foods, and also require carbs before proteins. If they eat just protein, their sugars drop. Those children/adults are treated with proglycem, (in the US called diazoxide). Any drug has side effects, so it's not something you would want to start on your own. But you may find that you can do some research on the genetics of hyperinsulinism/hypoglycemia and see if you fit into the picture somehow. Mayo clinic found that after bariatric surgeries, the underlying defect was discovered, and with removal of part of the pancreas, the person stopped having low blood sugars. "

" thanks Visiting. Interesting that you mention this. Over the weekend I had a low blood sugar episode and I was just eating protein the whole time. I'll do some research.

Thanks for the information :) "
