Hi all, I am glad to have found this forum I am at my wits end and was beginning to think I am going mad!
A couple of years ago my health deteriorated noticeably and I lost a lot of weight, I was tested for an over-active thyroid, diabetes was mentioned and eventually I was told that it might be a pituitary problem, which others have disagreed with. Anyway suffice to say that I have not been diagnosed in any way and I am finding it increasingly difficult to cope with these symptoms. I have real problems with my blood glucose levels, in that generally they are usually far too low and it knocks me for six every month around the same time as my periods (I am not sure if that is related in any way?) I have always needed to eat lots or I would feel “funny” and have experienced about 7 major “episodes” where I have become extremely frightened and aggressive and sometimes even "passed out" to be brought round by a spoonful of sugar. I have been to doctors about this – OBVIOUSLY! And am worryingly getting absolutely nowhere! The first doctor I saw ran a GTT incorrectly and then left the country before advising me of the results. The second suggested an H1AC test but on the day could not draw enough blood and another have told me I am becoming fixated and really don't need to use a blood glucose monitor at all. One doctor has suggested to me I try the GTT test again but now I am unable to fast for the 12 hours required, so the three day stay in hospital has been suggested to test for hypoglycaemia but given I am in Spain and I have not been able to gain private medical cover or work because of this all treatment is being paid for privately and I am not sure we can afford it now. I am scared that we have exhausted all medical options here as I have been told that endocrinologists are “not that great in Spain”. Anyway this month things have got progressively worse. I was prepared with the lead up to my period for my blood glucose to drop for a day or so and have always in the past been able to raise it by eating but that didn't happen. I spent Sunday sitting on my sofa whilst my blood sugar thrashed up and down from 3.4mmol/l (61 mg/dl) to 10.2mmol/l (185 mg/dl) then back down again. It did this continuously all day and I only had to so much as look at food at it would rocket. The next day the complete opposite happened and try as I might I couldn't raise it, at one point getting as low as 2.6mmol/l (48 mg/dl) and the whole day only achieving the highest of 5.3mmol/l (95 mg/dl) through excessive eating. Today is the same, I am sitting at around 3.4mmol/l (61 mg/dl) continuously. I have been told on so many occasions that there is nothing wrong with me, maybe I am a hypochondriac but I know I used to feel much better than this and have a much different relationship with food. I am stick thin now (under eight stone) and I am six foot tall so, as I am sure you can imagine, am not looking my greatest. This has had a profound effect on my confidence and I have become a somewhat social recluse for fear of having one of these “attacks”. Anyway any tips or advice at all would be greatly appreciate at this time, both I and my very long suffering boyfriend would be most grateful. Thanks in advance for any help. Make sure you all look after yourselves. Posted on 09/22/09, 02:09 pm |

2 pieces of advice:
purchase the Low Blood Sugar Handbook by Edward Krimmel, this has been a source of support to me for over the past 20 years. I was told back then by many doctors that it is in my head until one doctor was nice enough to diagnose me with Hypoglycemia, His treatment plan was however to purchase this book. At that time he admitted that physicians knew very little about the condition. 2. Visit the website The Cycle Diet.com I have learned that hypoglycemia and PMS go hand in hand. Actually I have read that at the Luteal Phase of your cycle which are days 21-28, estrogen levels are higher, estrogen increases the efficiency of insulin causing hypoglycemia. So we have hypoglycemia to begin with and then during this time drop even lower. Hope this helps. You'll find I'm afraid that you will not find many answers from physcians, it will depend upon you to do all the homework and research.

Hi,
Thank you for the reply and very useful tips. I have ordered a copy of both books today and eagerly await their arrival. I have also had a look at the site you suggested and from just a quick glance can see that it is going to be very useful, as I have undoubtedly unknowingly been making my symptoms worse. Anyway here's hoping that next month is even slightly better! Thanks again and take care.

I find that sometimes after my period, I am very sad...and I never knew why. Could this be the luteal phase and the hypo reacting? I haven't been officially diagnosed, but I know that I have reactive hypo. I am so glad to have found this site and I am going to check out that book. When doctors don't help, you tend to research on your own. I am making an appt with my doctor this week or next. I feel like I am finally getting somewhere. I have always attributed everything to "anxiety"..but not anymore.

Great Advice Jacquemor. I have Edward Krimmel as well. Invaluable resource. I also like "Foods of the Bible" and Click here: In Light Of Truth - Hypoglycemia - A Biblical Plan for Dealing with Chronic Low Blood Sugar copy and paste: http://www.inlightoftruth.com/arti...

Hangry: Try 2 weeks of nothing but protein snacks every 2 houra while you are awake including right before bed. If your symptons improve, you have hypoglycemia. They may worsen for the first week, don't give up. This is described in the krimmel book.

I highly recommend going on a low sugar low starch diet. If you eat any bread, potato, noodle, rice, or sugar make sure you eat enough meat or protein to counteract it. Drink milk, eat cheese, nuts. I eat apples for fiber. I have been able to control my hypoglycemia with diet. I can tell if I take in too much sugar...I get sick. If I eat right and drink lots of water I feel 100% better. I am trying to cut out all soft drinks. You might try browsing online for hypoglycemic diets to hold you over until your books come. I hope you feel much better soon.

I'm not sure what's going on with me but it sounds like what you are all talking about with the Hypoglycemia. Four months ago, I fell to the floor and didnt realize it until I heard my self yell. "Get up" I got up and then I felt really warm and began to sweat profusely. I put a cold towel around my neck and sat on the couch and then I ate some peanut butter in a little time I felt better. I called my mom and she said it sounds like low blood sugar. So I continued to eat and tried to eat everyday (since I had poor eating habits) I felt better. Well on a long trip from California to NY (Driving) I got the same symptoms (and I was driving alone) scary feeling. I pulled over and called my mom and she said to get a ting of OJ and drink it, then wait 20 mins and eat chicken. Id id that and immediately felt better. Tonight I was making dinner and I thought it was hot in my house and I began to sweat and then my hands were shaking so badly I couldn't hold the jar of peaches then I turned on the air conditioner. It didn't help, so I got a cold towel and put it around my neck and then I ate some canned peaches in light syrup and then some orange slices. I began to feel better. I am hypothyroid but I seem to feel okay with that. Just wondering if anyone has ever had these same symptoms and does it sound like low blood sugar to you? My mom is hypoglycemic so I'm not sure if it's heredity.
