Sorry this is long, but I want some opinions on this. May 30th I almost passed out when I was out running errands. This was about 4:30pm, I had a cinnamon roll for breakfast, and then a cookie and later an ice cream sandwich (horrible I know) and missed lunch that day. A lady gave me two glucose tablets and I grabbed a bag of peanut butter filled pretzels and ate them. My husband came and got me and we had to pull over two or three times for me to lay down. When I laid down I felt better. Keep in mind I'm 26, also nursing and I live in Texas, so it's HOT. I went to the doctor the next Tuesday (that happened Sat.) He took blood and urine samples. He said my Blood sugar from that test was fine, but he said my Ketones were at the highest concentration possible, which means I could be dehydrated. Well, When he called back with the lab tests he started saying something about it might be an inner ear virus that sometimes that can cause "dizziness". Well, as you all know when you're about to pass out, you don't feel "dizzy", so I felt like he was trivializing my symptoms. Between then and now I continued to have spells of lightheadedness off and on.
So I finally made an appointment to see my mom's doctor 'cus she's always saying how good she is. Well she immediately wanted me to do an OGTT because she knows my mom is diabetic. So the Thursday before last, I had to fast for the glucose tolerance test that morning, so missed breakfast. Then after 2 hourly checks, we went and ate at IHOP. I didn't have that much sugar, just a little syrup, keeping in mind, that I've never had a problem eating sweets before. Well, I go home and lay down to rest after that, but a few hours later I had to get up and my head started killing me and I felt like passing out and nauseous. I felt so bad I called my dr's nurse and she said to go ahead and call 911. I did that and the EMT's came out. They checked my blood sugar and it was 115. They also checked my BP and heart rate, which was more than 10 points higher standing up than laying down. He said that meant I didn't have enough fluids in me, so my heart was having to work harder when I stood up. And then I vomited and fell asleep. When I woke up I felt better. So again, I just thought I was dehydrated. But then my nurse called with the OGTT results and said I'm hypoglycemic. She said at the first testing (before drinking the drink) it was 72, then at one hour it was 67, then at 2 hours it was 59. But some research on the internet says that it's not uncommon for women who have fasted to have low blood sugar, bu not necessarily indicate a condition, and it said that the OGTT can actually trigger hypoglycemic symptoms in non-hypo patients. And that a better way to diagnose hypoglycemia is to test when the patient is having symptoms. Since then I have cut out sugar and started eating 5-6 small healthy meals a day but I'm still feeling lightheadedness off and on that doesn't necessarily go away after I eat, and when I test my BS during these symptoms, it's normal. I'm just curious does this really sound like hypoglycemia or more like dehydration or mild hypoglycemia complicated by dehydration. I'm just confused and kind of in denial, because I have a major sweet tooth and usually have no problem eating sweets, up until these instances. What do you think? Posted on 08/17/09, 04:08 pm |

Are you eating any protein in your meals or snacks? IMO, you need more protein and complex carbs, and NO sweets for the a while, so your body can get less stressed, and adjust a bit.
Hubby and I love to have biscuits & sausage gravy (very little sausage). In order to get more protein in, I chop up a boiled egg and mix it in with the gravy. In fact, I keep boiled eggs on hand all the time. If I eat a plate of raw veggies as a snack, I slice up an egg in order to have some protein. We fequentlly have a handful dry roasted peanuts as our snack. Sometimes it's just maybe a 1/4 cup of cottage cheese with a spoonful of pineapple. We just try to get in protein at various times during the day. I hope these suggestions will help you, or cause you to think of other options. Good luck and good health.
