Hello, Im 18 years old and i was diagnosed with an eating disorder in 2007. Since then, the doctor has discovered that my eating disorder was due to the fact that i have Hypoglycemia and that i often craved sugary foods more than normal foods.
Now, its like my body has desensitised itself to sugar and even after eating a balanced diet and regular top ups of sugar. about an hour after eating, i pass out. Luckily im always with my boyfriend and he carries chocolate bars with him as i explained to him what my blood sugars are like. Now though, Im starting a new job and dont know how to tell someone i have it, even so ive been alright so far and have worked about 2 weeks. But im scared im going to pass out and no one will know what to do. :S Kace x Posted on 07/22/09, 04:07 pm |

Can you give us some idea of what your day is like, such as frequency of meals and snacks, types of food, anything you can think of concerning your eating habits.

Get a medical ID bracelet that is custom engraved on the back so people know what to do. I think so many people think "low blood sugar, you need to eat more sugar" but it's really the opposite- you need to eat more protein and complex carbs (whole grain), preferably together. Keep peanuts or beef jerky on you, when you start to feel shaky or that cold sweat, eat a small bit of sugar (a lollipop or a few sips of juice) followed by the nuts or jerky.
Beware of the "white" carbs- I had an episode after snacking on rice crackers- I couldn't understand how my sugars could tank when I was just snacking! But the rice crackers react just like sugar in our bodies. Maybe take a half sandwich of Peanut Butter on whole wheat for a snack- they don't need refrigeration so you can make a couple at a time. Good luck, and tell your coworkers! It may save your life if they know how to respond when you pass out.
