I have been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism a few weeks ago with a heart rate of 120. I was prescribed meds for hyperthyroid and also for heart rate, I can't get myself to take any of them. I had a specialist confirm the diagnosis and even still I am in denial. Like I will be fine with out the meds. I don't know what to do, I feel like if I take the meds they will kill me, and if I don't take the meds...well I'll be fine. I can't keep going to other doctors to get proof because it's in the numbers, I can see them for myself but at the same time my denial keeps me from doing anything about it. I don't know what I am afraid of. One thing is that the heart meds worry me because although my heart rate is fast (as far as they say) my blood pressure is usually really low like 80/60. It worries me that my blood pressure will go even lower and I don't want that. As far as the hyperthyroid meds, I just don't feel wierd. Yeah at times I feel a bit tired, but that is really it, unless being depressed on and off has something to do with it too. Either way, I can deal with both with out meds. Please help me figure out what I should do. They are really pushing RIA and I am surely not about doing that if I can't get myself out of denial in the first place. Thanks for all your help!

" Hi:

I was the same way as you were, in denial and with a heart rate that jumped up to 120. Well, I didn't want to take any meds, but guess what? Wishing away my thyroid problem didn't work. My HR jumped up to 170, I ended up in the hospital with a suspected thyroid storm. I was in there for three days. I had to go on the meds that I didn't want to take in the first place. But eventually I began feeling so much better. I could think more clearly now.

I have now been on the meds for six years and have not had any major problems from taking them.

Take care... "

" Hi:

Which med and how often are you taking it? It's meant to be taken two or three times a day, at least.

Are you taking a beta blocker to help lower down the heart rate?

Lab again in six weeks and get the Free T3, Free T4, and TSH. You want to make sure you are on track with healing and to make sure your Free Ts get to the mid ranges of normal, at least and to adjust your ATD (antithyroid drug) accordingly.

Continue labby every six weeks of the Free Ts and the TSH.

Yes, watch out for the sore throat, especially. Stomache problems usually doesn'y happen as much, if so, eat something and take the pill..

Any other questions...? You'll be fine!

{{{hugs}}} :-) "

" I am on Methimazole, it says to take it once a day. it is 10 MG. I am supposed to be on a heart med (Beta Blocker) but that med scares me the most because I have fairly low blood pressure and don't want it to go down any further. My TSH was ,001 and my T4 was normal and my T3 was high (can't remember the numbers) but it shows hyperthyroid anyway. I hope the methimazole takes away the anxiety and the depression because my boyfriend, i am sure, thinks i hate him! lol "

" Hi again:

I was told the same thing too, take MMI (Methimazole) once per day. My thyroid levels wouldn't change, then I went to twice a day and it still wouldn't change. When I found out the pharmacy instructions online, together with other people from thyroid boards elsewhere to take three times a day in divided doses, I did much better.

I still take MMI three times a day and now take only 3.75 mg per day.

Make sure the labs tested are the Free T3 and the Free T4. The regular T3 and T4 are affected by our hormones, what we eat, etc.

Consider checking your blood pressure and find out where you are at. If your blood pressure is higher than normal, it will be a good idea to take a beta blocker for now. Taking a beta blocker helps with bringing the FT3 levels down as well as any hypER symptoms you experienced.

Don't worry, the meds will help take away the anxiety and depression and you should feel a lot better in a few weeks. :-) "

" That is what I am confused about... My blood pressure is low but my heart rate is supposedly high...is that possible because I just don't trust that? "

" Hi:

Okay if this were me and I knew my BP was down even with the high heart rate, I'd go and ask the dcotor about this. Maybe ask about taking a lowered amount might be fine.

Good luck...! :-) "

" Yes, but is that even possible? "

" Uh huh, yes, it's possible to take smaller amounts. That's what people do to wean /downoff of the ATDs and the beta blockers as both their Free T3 and Free T4 thyroid levels improve.

Go and talk to the doctor about this... "

" I have been taking the methimazole for about 10 day's now and don't feel any different, I know that I have to be patient. I just want the anxiety to go down and depression to fade... I have noticed just now that I haven't been picking at my fingers as much, may be anxiety is deviating a bit...! "
