Hashimoto's - Any place to find info?

Hi - New here, is there any good place here for those with Hashimoto's? I am not either hyper or hypo (accoring to docs/labs) but i sure feel both extremes quite often during the year (i.e. hypo during the stressful holiday season and hyper during the summer when work picks up to a frantic pace).
I take kelp when i feel hypo. what can i take to regulate me on the flip side, hyper? I have been to 3 endos and they all say i am "fine". One even told me not to come back to just see my GP. thanks. Posted on 07/01/09, 01:07 pm |

Hi:
Consider posting your question to www.elaine-moore.com. Elaine has had an RAI done many years ago. She is a medical technologist with having written a number of articles and books. She can better help you with the Hashimoto's issues. I don't suggest taking Kelp when you feel hypO. I think you may consider doing a Block and Replace therapy which uses both ATDs (antithyroid drugs) and replacement meds at the same time. These will control both hypO/hypER symptoms at the same time and for what you experience through out the year. Do you have any labs to share with us? The correct labs to have done are the: Free T3, Free T4, and TSH. Have you ever had the thyroid antibodies tests done such as the TSI and the TRAb or the TBII? (Refer to a prior post for explanations on these). Take care... and nice to meet you! :-)

Wow. just from reading your comment i can clearly see that the THREE endocronologists that i have seen stink. The tests they order are basic at best. The last endo i went to wrote me a follow up note that said saw no reason as to why i ws so incredibly fatigued and ordered B12 test, which came back "normal". I am trying to get into another doctor to see if they are any better.
Test Results are all over a year old, since my main endo went on maternity leave and i lagged on rescheduling, so i go back in december. 4/17/08 - TSH 1.66, free thyroxine 1.0 (felt a little tired at time, but not bad, on suppliments, not kelp) 5/7/07 - TSH 1.3, free thyroxine 1.0 (felt same as last time) 4/5/06 - TSH 1.8, free thyroxine 1.0 2/3/05 - TSH = 1.4, T3 = 285, T4=1.0 11/19/04 - TSH = 2.0, T3 ttl = 112, free T3 = 309, T4 = 1.1 2/12/04 - TSH = 0.02, Free t3 = 331, free thyroxine = 1.0, Thyroglobulin antibodies 70 so those are my very old test results and i feel silly posting them since they are so out of date. but thank you very much for your post and i will check out elaine moore as well as the other tests you mentioned. You seem to be an amazing wealth of knowledge and i appreciate that you took the time to post.

I replied the first time around and the post went out the wndow! I will try again.
Get new labs of the labs I mentioned. Then get labs every two of months of the Free Ts and the TSH to see how you are doing. Consider keeping a food diary to see what sets you off or makes you hypO/hypER. Use this to compare with your labs to see what sets you off. Look at your diet, for many of us with thyroid problems; we can't have excess Iodine, avoid preservatives such as aspartame, msg, red #3, etc., excess sugar, dairy, etc. can cause poblems. Do you take multvitamin? Avoid a multi that has Iodine in it. Buy Iodine-free multi. That's all I can think of for the moment. Take care... :-)

You're welcome! :-) You'll be fine as I did. I had to learn from the experts at the thyroid boards and to be proactive.
{{{hugs}}} :-)
