Hi,
Has anyone here experienced a flare-up of hypERthyroid symptoms as a result of taking natural progesterone? I was diagnosed with postpartum hyperthyroid 6 mo after the birth of my daughter. It took more than a year to resolve but I've had normal thyroid levels for about 2 years. I was just prescribed oral progesterone for endometrial hyperplasia and have been taking it for 3 weeks. For the last few days I've felt like I did with the hyperthyroid, mainly extreme irritability, inability to concentrate, jitters, insomnia, heart palpitations and night sweats. No racing pulse or muscle weakness (yet). I read online that women with hyPOthyroid who are treated with natural progesterone often can cut back or even eliminate their medication. I haven't heard of anyone going from normal to hyper, but it seems possible. Thanks, AllieKay Posted on 06/24/09, 05:06 pm |

Yes, unfortunately it is a common problem for many of us with Graves' Disease and natural Progesterone. I cannot take it either as I will have the exact same symptoms you mentioned. I have perimenapausal symptoms and tried the natural Progesterone cream and unfortunately within two days I was in such a bad way. It seems I was in a much better shape without the cream.
Take care... :-)

Thanks for the info. My thyroid problems were atypical for PPT, but I was never diagnosed with Graves. They gave me PTU which isn't supposed to work for PPT. I never thought it worked, but they did. So I guess I could have Graves that is/was in remission. I don't currently take any thyroid meds.
I'm not sure what to do. The progesterone was supposed to address unpleasant menstrual problems I've had for a couple of years (spotting or more for 2 weeks per month). I guess I'll see if the thyroid-like problems get worse or go away when I stop taking the progest next week. After that, I'm supposed to do monthly 10-day cycles of the progest. We ladies sure do have complicated systems! It's strange that there aren't any warnings about progest and Graves. Everyone seems to think the stuff is a miracle cure and that you can never get too much! AK

If I can, I'll try to find that huge website for women and put the link here. Iit was quite a large thread on Progesterone. Many women wrote saying why they couldn't use the natural Progesterone for various reasons. I had tried this on two separate occasions and gotten the same results many of them had. Ugh...! :-(
