I went to see the doctor yesterday and once again she didn't seem to be concerned with the free T3 and T4 results. She said she could tell enough with the TSH level? Also, my psychiatrist is the one who actually ordered the T3/T4 TSH test, and he was saying he is more concerned with the T3 because if it is off, there is some kind of medication I can take to get it back to normal. When I mentioned this to my family doctor, she said he was talking about Iodine and that is what my synthroid is for????
I will ask for the result myself on Monday along with the scale, but in the meantime, I am so confused! Posted on 08/08/09, 02:08 pm |

Hi:
For us to help you better, please post all lab results with the ranges. Find another doctor who will order the Free T3 and the Free T4 tests together with the TSH. Not the T3 and T4 tests. Definitely do not go by TSH test alone. Your psychiatrist did the rght thing by ordering the Free Ts tests. Did you have an RAI or were hypO to begin with or...? {{{hugs}}}

I was hypo to begin with. Doctors have dropped my synthroid from .250 to .100 in a two month period. I will get the results and post them.
Just curious, are you a physician?

Oh no, not a doctor! :-) I am a patient advocate on several thyroid board who has had Graves' Disease since 2000. I researched online as well partcipated at the boards, looked at other people's blogs and articles to get an idea how to get my health back.
{{{hugs}}} :-) P.S. Just to let you know, both hypOs and hypERS need the Free T3 and the Free T4 tests to see how they are doing.

Mm is right ..your psych doc seems to know a lot more about thyroids than the doc who gives you the Synthroid. The med he probably meant was Cytomel,(a t-3 med) or Armour thyroid which has both hormones in it. Some do well on these. You would take Synthroid which is a T-4 replacement, with the Cytomel which is a T-3 replacement. Or you could try the Armour by itself. You probably need to get another doc who is more with it. there are other options for you.

Free T3 was 3.0 with the scale ranging from 2.3 - 4.2. So isn't this in the mid range?
And what does it take to raise the TSH level?

What are your lab results of the FreeT4 and the TSH with the ranges? If you have thyroid antibodies, it will have an affect on the TSH.
Take care... :-)

P.S. It looks like your FT3 levels is almost in the mid range.
