Advice:
Fluctuating TSH levels towards low TSH

Hi ! My wife has hyperthyroid. She has gotten about 4 tests done in the last 2 years for TSH levels and the first test showed a TSH level of 0.03 and the recent one showed a TSH level of 0.01. In between her TSH levels were normal and the doctor never put her on any medication.

The doctor tells us now that since her TSH levels self adjust and the doctor cannot put her on any medication and that they do not know why her TSH levels fluctuate and at some time go down.

I believe that the doctors have not yet done T3 and T4 level test. I am very concerned about my wife's health. I am really concerned about my wife's health specially because we feel the doctors don't give us enough information until and unless we ask a questions.

The doctor also tells us that until and unless TSH levels become normal we should not try to have kids.

Any advise or suggestions in this regard will be highly appreciated.

Thanks a lot

" Hi and welcome:

Please insist to the doctor that he/she runs the Free T3 and the Free T4 thyroid tests. One cannot go by the TSH alone. If the Free Ts are high, over the normal ranges, this is when is a good time to take ATDs (antithyroid drugs).

Take care... :-) "

" Yes Mm is right. I can't believe she wasn't tested for Free T 3 and 4 with such a low tsh. You need another doctor. Does she have symptoms? She needs testing done every 3 months anyway I would think, especially if she has symptoms. "

" free t3 and free t4 are the tests that should be used. if the doctor isn't testing those, he doesn't know what he is doing!
there are also natural things to try, including a gluten-free diet.
best wishes!

" Also avoid iodine. It's in shellfish, processed foods and a lot of dairy products. It makes symptoms worse. "

" Hope007:

I too support someone having health issues likely much as your own. Its tough and will be tough on you. Be informed know as much as she does, read the same materials. Get tough skin, if she is anxious etc, it can be difficult at times, remember she may not be herself. I agree get a new doctor. We have been to see about 4-5 and finally think we are on the right track. Its a complicated process and I find having a list of questions ready for when we go in to the doctors really helps. Focused questions and usually fairly good answers. Be strong!!
