Advice:
Weight gain due to hyperthyroidism

I was recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. I have gained 35 lbs because of this. I went into the doctor feeling sluggish & she did a blood test, now I have hyperthyroidism. Who knos how long I've had it?! What I do know is that i'm 5"3 and 175 due to this mess. When I gave birth to my daughter in 3/08, I was 140 and it's been going up since then. My doctor has no idea what treatment she wants to give me & she won't prescribe me fentermine (the weight loss drug). Can someone please give me some ideas of how to lose weight? Will i gain a massive amount when the doc puts me on those treatments? Thanks!

" So I went back to the doctor on Friday & she said that my gland is now underactive & very small. She told told me to stop taking the Methimizole & athenol (beta blocker b/c of my heart rate) I'm happy about that but im scared that I'm going to see new symptoms. She said that the weight gain is probably because of inactivity (whatever) but I've gotten the okay to start back to the gym and exercising more frequently. And I am doing so. So I just recommended exercising whenever you can, even if its just a little bit. "

" my endo today told me that weight gain may occur when treatment starts for the hyperthyroid. He said that the hyperthyroid keeps you underweight and when you take the meds to correct it you gain the wight you should have had. I have not started any meds yet the doctor predicts a 5-10 lb gain for me as i am severely underweight for my height (6 ft 130 lbs). My suggestions for loosing the weight is dancing, fun and good exercise as well. also it is summer now biking is another fun way to pass the time and will help keep you in shape. taking the stairs instead of the elevator and walking instead of driving are great too. I hope you have a fun summer and that everything works out well for you. "

" If you want some sound advice ask Elaine Moore, her website is:

http://elaine-moore.com/QA/tabid/5...

if you join you can ask her these things and only she will answer you (she's an expert on Graves and written a book on this and other auto immune conditions) I have heard that either some were hypo right before Graves or some DO gain weight with it, it's true, shame on docs for not knowing this! "
