I was diagnosed with hypothryroidism about two years ago and for the past two months I have been having jaw problems. It seems to unhing or pop out of place when I eat or open my mouth too far. It is fairely painless but very annoying. Anyone have any thoughts?

I don't know if that could be related or not. My jaw used to always give me problems from the time I was about 12 or so. It would pop out of place, and eating was not easy, lots of mashed potatoes, lol. When I had my impacted wisdom teeth out when I was 19 or 20 (can't remember exactly the year) since I was under surgery anyway, the doc removed cysts I had in my jaw bone and realigned my jaw the best he could. Some of my joint had been deteriorated from never being properly aligned. It has never popped out again, but recently it's been throbbing and clicking when I eat again. But I would go see an oral surgeon and get some xrays, they'll be able to tell you what's going on. These things never get better on their own.

I have had TMJ since my teens and I am 46 now. I find a lot of factors play a part in this. Sometimes even having the wrong thyroid levels can throw everything off in the body and make things worst.
Take care... :-)

I have developed TMJ problems for the past two years and lately it has been so bad that I went to an Oral surgeon...the cracking, popping is so bad not to mention the headaches that I get. He told me that they are related to the TMJ disorder and also the shoulder and neck pain. I can hardly sleep because it is very uncomfortable...it was painful in the beginning but now I am dealing more with the cracking every time I eat, and yawn. It is on my right side so I pretty sore on that side. I am waiting for the insurance to approve a sling and he said that if this doesn't help I would need surgery because it might start getting stuck. Thank God I am not the wild type because my husband would be in big trouble. I don't want to picture calling 911 with my mouth stuck open and you know what. I keep thinking that the TMJ disorder might be related to the thyroid.

I have had TMJ ever since I could remember, I did not think that it had anything to do with my Hyperthyroid issue. But I do know that I tend to clench my teeth when I am stressed out and this makes the popping and pain worse. Now that I think about it, the popping and the pain became really bad when I was first diagnosed because my anxiety levels were through the roof.

Lol I.had this happen to me when I first started taking levothyroxine. Even eating a sandwich or chips would give me like a lockjaw and i couldn't chew at all and could barely open my mouth. I was so.hungry that i was breaking little pieces and shoving it in my mouth. What I do is put my tongue the roof of my mouth and open and close my mouth and it eventually loosened it. The lockjaw thing only lasted a week.
