Has anyone had positive results from a thoracic sympathectomy? I'm planning on having one in June. I have read about a lot of negative results due to compensatory sweating. Please let me know if you have had one, and what you think. My sweating is pretty much everywhere. The worst places are my feet, hands, and groin.

hi there yeah i had my operation 1.5 years ago and is the biggest mistake in my life. my back and groin region suffer really bad with the compensatory effects. ive tried to counter this by wearing black clothes all the time and using lots of talcum powder to try and absorb the moisture but doesnt really work i really dread the summers and now find mysely staying in doors and making excuses for not going out im very depressed about it and just wish i could get help or turn back time.

I had surgery firstly for hands back in 1999. This worked well until the compensatory sweating moved to my feet - this was horrible as I was slipping all over the place and they also became quite smelly :-( I then had the lumbar surgery - and this has left me with a sweaty back and other places where I never used to sweat before (back is worst - and I have to wear dark clothing when out of the house to disguise it unless its a freezing day when I won't sweat).
Do I regret it? Well its easier to disguise the sweating of my back than my hands (I was soooo embarrassed of my constant sweaty hands - I had to lean on paper when writing, shaking hands was a nightmare etc). But I can no longer wear coloured clothing and my wardrobe is dictated by my condition - I'm always on a constant hunt to find tops that disguise the "sweat". But I do wish that I'd tried that Ion thing where you hook yourself up to a machine with an electrical current. However, I never knew about this as it wasn't mentioned. My advice would be to try other avenues first as surgery does have its complications (my lung collapsed the first time, and I have two 5 inche scars for the lumbar op). Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Hi there thanks very much for replying its really good to hear from some in similar circumstances as myself. I also had major post op problems after my bilateral sympathectomy and still have nerve pain from my 4 scars my left lung also collapsed and it took nearly one week to reinflate back to normal. Prior to my major surgery i had the opportunity to try out the electrical current machine for both my feet and hands but to be honest it really had no effect at all. I can totally relate as mentioned wearing dark clothes most of the year round which can be very depressing as it only really black clothes that actually disguise the sweat marks but there's nothing else that i can think of to try or do?
many thanks for your reply take care
