Do I have secondary hyperhidrosis?

I'm 35 and about 15 months ago I started getting abnormally sweaty in my groin and armpits. Sweat doesn't drip off me or soak through my clothes like most of the cases of primary hyperhidrosis that I've read about. Instead, my symptoms are such that the affected areas give off a tremendous amount of heat and feel very moist. I'm not sure if the moistness is just a result of the excessive heat from those areas.
I use prescription-strenght aluminum chloride on my armpits to try to minimize the moistness. It helps a little but I still have to go to the bathroom at lunchtime to wash myself off (both groin and armpits) and put on deodorant to keep from smelling too bad. I use powders on my groin area to try to absorb some of the moistness, but they're mostly ineffective. By the end of the day I still smell terrible and try not to get too close to people. My clothes get funky and have to be washed after every use. It seems to have slowly gotten a little worse over the 15 months, as I've started to feel, to lesser degrees, excessive heat/moistness in the middle of my chest, the inner part of my elbows, further down my groin area to my butt, and throughout my body. I saw a dermatologist who said I have hyperhidrosis but after looking into it more on my own, I'm not confident that he even knew much about it. I've read that secondary hyperhidrosis starts later in life and usually results from some other disorder or problem. I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about it, if my symptoms might indicate secondary hyperhidrosis, and what potential causes might be. Thanks. Posted on 12/04/08, 11:12 pm |

Hey,
Did you use Boto or have any surgery? If so - it's called compensatory sweating. If not, you may just need to use a topical product to stop the sweating. Klima Antiperspirant is a topical hyperhidrosis spray that you can get from their website. You can use it on any part of your body. It will definitely work better than cornstarch! I have used it on my groin on and off...
