After reading many posts I feel very blessed to have lived a basically normal life in spite of my hydrocephalus. I had five revisions by age five due to growth. One at eight, eleven, fourteen, seventeen. Had begun to function normally without shunt for six months. I had two revisions within a two week period at 19. I have had no problems with shunt since, and I'm now 32. My dr is hopeful that this shunt shouldn't need replacement. One of the posts asked about shunt affecting pregnancy. That was something I hadn't given much thought, but made me curious. I hope to have a family one day. I'm glad to have a place to talk.

I agree with you about feeling blessed. Most people that I've spoken to on here, two of whom have become dear friends of mine, have had many complications. It's rare to find a hydrocephalic such like myself in terms of their ability to function. I've had eight shunt related surgeries and ten in all and it hasn't been too bad. In between surgeries I managed to finish grade school. I didn't get sick with another malfunction until '05 from 1996, right out of high school.I had my two other surgeries done in high school they were really minor. So far almost four and half years with just the minor cold, flus, Crohn's Disease and things that "normal" people get.

yes. reading all the replies i realize how lucky i am. i am 18 and i have had my shunt replaced only 4 times, once at 4 months, once at 6 years, and twice in a two week period at 13. i haven't had any other surgeries or broken bones. just colds and stuff like that. kind amakes you think that, yea you have this problem, but it could be worse.

Same here! I was shunted within a week after birth, but I have no ways the amount of complications (hydro related) that a lot of other people have had.

I've been through more than my fair share of shunt revisions (26) and surgeries (3) I still feel that I'm extremely blessed because my whole profession is based around my medical condition. Right now, I'm in training to become a certified nursing assistant, and after that, I'll go to nursing school for my RN... I eventually want to work at a children's hospital on the neurosurgery floor. If I didn't have hydrocephalus and all its bad... I wouldn't be able to experience all the good that comes with it.
