I have only been shunted for four 1/2 years. But I am soon to have my 10th shunt-related surgery! (Another revision; not working right.) I have read of some people going 18 to 20 years before needing a revision, and wonder if I am just unlucky?

In your case, I'm sorry to say that I have gone 22 or so years after my first shunt insert without a problem. I didn't know that some hydros needed more than one surgery until I learnt to surf the net 4 years ago. Until then I never met another hydrocephalic. I found that there is a privately funded combined spina bifida/hydrocephalus support group, with a couple of social workers, right here in my home city, Brisbane, Australia. I'm still not sure why some people need plenty of revisions while others don't.

My son is 3 and was born with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus - he had a shunt put in at 1 day old and just had his first revision 2 months ago - as for needing additiona revisions - my neurosurgeons simply don't know - he could go for years without needing another one or need to have revisions over and over again. There sems to be no rhyme or reason for this which drives me crazy because my son (Drake) can't get a simple fever without us wondering is it the shunt??? Good luck with your next surgery - maybe 10 will be your lucky number!! - Kati

I have had the same shunt since I was five or six, should I be expecting a shunt revision anytime soon? Could I possibly keep this same shunt for the rest of my life? I am now 23.

I was told the simpler the shunt the longer it should last! I think it varies from person to person. I saw someone in hospital who had one for 16 years but then had two revisions in two months - Its a unknown.

I have been shunted for 42 years now. My last shunt revision was 1995. The longest I have ever gone is 15 years I am 12 now. When I went for a check up from my surgery from my last revision they told me going 5 years was great. Some of us are just different from others

I have seen both sides of the coin so to speak. I am 39 and have had hydrocephalus since birth. My first shunt lasted 12 years and the second lasted 20. But in the last 7 years I have had 11 revisions.
