non-christian homeschoolers

I haven't seen a homeschooling group for non christian homeschoolers and I was wondering if there were even any non-christians in this group or anyone who is christian but doesn't want their children learning from christian homeschool programs. I am probably going to leave this group because 99% of the resources give here are religiously based and I will not work with those resources. If there are other non fundie homeschoolers (IE you're not pulling your kid out of school just because they teach too much science there and not enough religion/mythology) then I was thinking of starting another group where the attention is focused more on the childrens' cognitive development and well being rather than religion. Or, if you happen to know of a group like what I"m looking for, please let me know. Otherwise, if I get no response, I'll just leave the group and try to find some place other than DS.

" I am catholic, and I am not doing any christian homeschool program. I think he gets enough of that on Sunday. "

" I am a non christian homeschooler. It is very hard trying to find curriculum that is not secular. Since the laws have been relaxed in my state, I can broaden my curriculum and not have to use the things that the state says I had to at one time. "

" I get really good results from computer games, Knowledge Adventure, Jumpstart and similar ones. PBS has some fantastic shows for learning. If you can get some used public school books that helps. Sometimes school districts will sell their curriculum that they don't use anymore. "

" I believe your comments are part legit. However you state that 99% of all sources are Christian; You use the term "Christian" and later loosely change it to "fundie", and you state that people don't focus on cognitive development. I find that a little inaccurate. I think everyone has a right to submit their ideas. I would hate to ask anyone to stop submitting their sources because they are religious. Still, I do feel there may be a disproportional number of Christian homeschoolers. So, I feel non-Christians might benefit from a group focused on their interests (either non-religous or muslim, Hindu etc). It might be a good idea to start an additional group for secular homeschoolers (it would be very easy). I know your son is young (2 or 3?) and you are more pre-home-schooling. Still, I wanted to mention that as a former foster kid I was a little concerned with what I saw on your profile. you have an abusive husband who just bruised you by throwing an adult-toy at you. As a person who survived a very abusive household (and some foster care), I want to encourage you to consider preschool if you are struggling with abuse in your home (assuming you choose to stay). Perhaps you could find a good preschool. Pre-K is free in my state (Fla). Children are very perceptive and their cognitive development is impaired by stress. I am a big supporter of homeschooling but I also believe there is nothing wrong with using professional teachers. You can still supplement your child's education at home. "

" oops, son hit a button. as i was saying.. the adult toy thing was funny, not malicious. i even posted a thread about it in the healthy sex forum for a laugh. it was also when my son was asleep, by the way. I was supposed to catch it and missed. I'm laughing about it right now just thinking about it!

I have thought about using pre school, but i'm not sure about how much teasing goes on that young. I can't remember from when I was that old.. mostly for the interaction with other children until he's old enough to start other activities like martial arts or instrument lessons or what have you.

my husband and I are planning on individual therapy and marriage counseling in order to correct his behavior. Obviously, if his behavior doesn't change I'll have to leave "

" oh, and about the christian/fundie thing. The resources themselves are christian but the people are fundies because of the reasons they're homeschooling. If you're homeschooling because science is taught in schools (ie evolution) and not religion, then you're a fundamentalist. The two words aren't meant to be interchangeable (as i know some very liberal christians) "

" Oh....just having fun. I was thinking you might be in trouble. Glad to here you are safe.
I think by some standards I would be a moderately conservative Christian, but I love Science (could have taught Bio in my state) and my DH does too. His father is a published Scientist. I don't believe in Macro evolution but I feel my kids should understand because it is a popular concept among scientists. I homeschooled for a number of reasons. Like you, I was concerned that some teachers allow excessive teasing and/or bullying. I don't think preschool is an issue too much for teasing but I am no expert so you may want to ask a preschool teacher. My kids did some preschool and enjoyed it. It has been a while though. "
