high school science

I have a 15 year old sophomore who is currently in chemistry (not going too well) He plans to go to college to major in Secondary ed. history. My husband and I are butting heads on the rest of science courses for Jr. Sr. years. He is insisting on Physics etc. 15 yr. old struggles with the math. The local college with whom I have spoken feels better transcript grades out weigh "fancier" science classes with poor grades for admission plus SATs of course. I would rather have him do unique courses he enjoys like Geology or meteorlogy in which he will score well. What have any of you found when it comes to admission to college?

" I agree with the college. Transcripts, SAT and ACT scores seem to be the key. No way would I attempt physics if math isn't a great subject for him. Did he do microbiology as a Freshmen? I guess it all depends on the admission requirements of the college he's thinking about. Most colleges require two sciences, one earth, one physical in high school. If he has done Biology and Chemistry he may not need a third year, if his intended major is in the liberal arts. My suggestions would be geology as well, or physical geography.I really do think GPA is more important at this point, when it comes to being competitive for admission.
Good luck. "

" Thanks ab223, He did Biology as a freshman and did well 87% for the year. We are doing a diploma program that will give him an academic diploma so we will do 4 years of science but they are of our choice. They only require physics if you plan for the honors option in science. He will be doing the honors option in both history and music so I hope that will be of some advantage. "

" A friend of mine talked to me yesterday about her daughter's private high school. They offer some very different science options, that I thought you may be interested in also. They offer zoology, marine biological systems, and ecology as life science choices. Just a thought. Zoology sounds like a lot of fun to me. "
