Okay, I have wanted to join the service since I was 8. (I'm 16 now) Exceot, now that it is time to start the enlistment process (Talking to recruiters, getting info, ect.) I am running into problems on 2 fronts. 1. I am female. I am founding out it is very difficult to excel because of this particular trait. 2. I am homeschooled. Believe it or not MORE is actually expected of us. We have to score above average on the test before we're even considered. What really bothered me was talking to a naval recruiter (over the phone) last evening. When he asked what Highschool I attended I told him I was homeschooled and he say's "Oh your homeschooled?" It was the way he said it. As if to say "What's wrong with you?" I am just really frustrated. Knowing that I am just as comitted to this as some highschool football star. It makes me angry that I will have to work just or harder than him, but not be able to go as far in my career. Any advice on how to handle this?

" Don't worry your ASVAB scores will prove what you know. I don't think the recruiter was thinking anything derogatory about you. He was probably thinking about all the extra steps he was going to have to perform. When my husband joined, the military was eager for women to join. I don't know what has changed. If you really want to join, keep at it. Where there is a will, there is a way. Who said you wouldn't be able to go very far in your career? Maybe you should think about going to college first, that way when you join, you can be an officer. There were many programs that aided students with tuition, with a promise of service of three years. Good luck. "

" I appreciate you reply. It was the marines who offer less for women. I will still join, it just seems like there are so many obstacles. I wouldn't be able to afford college without military service. This is something I really want to do, regardless. And it's true, where there is a will there is a way. Thankyou for responding. Sorry about my spelling earlier, I was upset. "
