Starting to homeschool my sister.. any advice?

I am 28 and have my Associates Degree, working on my Bachelor's. My 16 year old step sister who lives with her mother just started high school has missed almost 2 months of school due to a recent asthma diagnosis. It's been so severe that she hasn't been able to go to school without at least one attack a day. Also, she has had complications which have lead to pneumonia, pleuracy, infections up the wazoo, stomach problems and allergic reactions to medications. The school was coming down on her absences, even though they were due to a medical condition, and finally she got the recommendation that she should consider home schooling. Her mom is often ill and didn't feel as if she could do it, so she asked if I could do it. Since I have the time, I accepted because she wants nothing more than to complete high school.
She is getting the paperwork to start the program from her principal tomorrow and also getting the proper documentation from her doctor tomorrow to file with the school board. However, does anyone have any suggestions, resources online or otherwise, ideas, advice that you can give me? I was a tutor in high school and college, but I've never dealt with the home schooling per se. Thanks! Posted on 01/16/08, 09:01 pm |

Start with a search engine, which will give you more sites than you know what to do with.
My kidlet is 17 and we have always homeschooled her. We started out with Switched on Schoolhouse. Everything is laid out for you. The lessons and tests. And it keeps track of the scores. It is Christian based. But a lot of people have used it. We quit using it because the kidlet wanted actual text books. Go figure. We get most of them from Christian Book Distributors as they have a pretty good selection and excellent prices. I think the one book we do not get from them is our math. We really like Math-U-See. (Even I am getting "it"). Oh, and be sure to check your state laws on homeschooling. HSLDA has a website for this www.hslda.org/hs/default.asp I think. Happy schooling! tcat
