My son is 18 but his emotional age is 14/15. We have been through the ringer with him and the school. No matter what we have tried he will not stay in class, he says he's "too distracted". When the teachers started to allow him to do his work at home he grades went way up. We had a bad incident on Monday and will be having an IEP tomorrow. We decided that it might be in his best interest to home school...Any suggestions would be most helpful!

" I noticed you said IEP, I wonder where you are from. Does he receive any services from that school district that you need to keep? Counseling, OT, PT anything like that. If so make sure you won't lose those services if you pull him out. Some states you will others you won't. Have you looked at any Vocational programs for him. Don't let them tell you that he can't do those programs because he is not where the say he has to be. Remind them that is why it is called an Individualized education plan. They can do whatever the group decided, They CAN make it happen. I have been thought it all this my AD/ emotionally disabled child. The biggest thing is stay CALM & don't be forced into any decision. Take a break if you need it. If you don't have an advocate, I would look into getting one. It helped me immensely. If your Son has ADD or emotional issues call you local chapter of the Alliance for the mentally ill. (NAMI) They have advocates that can help you. Good luck "

" Donna, I agree go ahead with all the testing. You might want to check out HSDLA and they provide you will all the rules for your particular state concerning hs. If you join for a small monthly fee, they will provide you with any lawyers you need for free in the future.

It could be that this child is distracted because he is bored. The one thing that I love about hs is that you can teach your son on his own time schedule and make the lessons catered to his interests. The main thing he needs to know is how to read, write, grammer rules, and how to study. He does not need to know every date in history or who invented what. He needs to know how to find out this information and how to outline chapters, takes notes, study and memorize for a test on the information.

Good luck and remember there are a ton of programs available to meet you and your sons needs. Good luck and I am sure all will work out for you. "
