My 5 year old broke out with hives yesterday for the first time and they were really bad. They went away with just basic home treatment but I don't know why she got them. I am worried she will get them again and it will be worst cuz when I have a reaction to something it is always worse each time. What should I do?

" I have hives all the time and no one knows what causes them. I take Zyrtec everyday to prevent them from coming back, but Benadryl worked for me for awhile in the beginning. I actually find liquid Benadryl helps more than the pill form weirdly enough. If she has multiple outbreaks, I'd take her to the allergist though. "

" I'm also like that I have no known causes for the hives. The doctor said some people actually have stages where they just go through hives and they could possibly grow out of it, or she might have an allergy to some foods.

Was there anything that she ate that she usually doesn't eat? "

" You need to go back and document everything she eat that day and keep it in the event it happens again. Look for patterns. This can also be caused from outdoor allergens. I have to take Claritin everyday so I don't break out. It could be soap, perfume, material, wood or really anything. "

" My hives didn't get better with Claritin. I went on Allegra, but it made me so tired and groggy all the time it started effecting my work so I can't take it anymore. My first outbreak was miserable, nothing relieved the itching and it spread all over my body. WHat helps me is sometimes is rubbing baby oil over my dry skin before toweling off after a shower. But I'm still reading up and asking doctors and finding out as much as I can about this. I'm miserable. "

" My hives seemed to be caused by the use of fragrances...at least that is what I surmised as they would get even worse when I was around strong fragrances or allowed them to come in contact with my body. Have you tried eliminating fragrances from his bath products and your laundry soap? "

" I'm quickly realizing that Nutrasweet is a huge trigger for my hives. I hadn't had any in awhile, then last night I had 1/2 can of diet soda. I woke up covered in hives. I wonder how many other things like that are triggers for me. "

" I'd take her to an allergist. Since they came on all the sudden it really seems like it's from something specific. They can do simple prick tests to find things she's allergic to. I had it done when i was 5 and we found out that i was allergic to a lot of foods and outdoor things. It really helped me to know what i am allergic to so i could avoid those things. Like you said, allergies can get worse, so for your daughters sake i'd really urge you to get that test done.. oh there's also a blood test that can be done, but it's not offered by most insurance companies. I've had that done as well and it was easier on me, since all they had to do was take some blood. either way, good luck with everything! "

" i am so crazy about this subject, in a good way, i think?
my little man did the same thing years ago...and hopeful peace for you, it hasn't happened since.
little ones are tough...it may have been something introduced to him, even a bug bite...that he was fighting. as long as he didn't have any difficulty breathing, say, YEAH.
still, freaky.
really watch what you feed him.
if you look on ALL the labels, almost everything contains a soy (lecithin), or corn (fructose, sucrose) component.
NOT to mention artificial sweeteners.
they are consumed by our children in bulk...
can you imagine having a CORN allergy? i THINK its one of the top 10 allergies, now.
i started cooking a very 'clean' diet for my child...i can give you pointers, if you want to email me...
i , TOO, was diagnosed with milk, soy, and an extensive other list of allergies at the age of FORTY. eek.
rambling, but have done a lot of looking into this...please let me know if i can help.
it'll be ok, though. promise.
you're a great mama for having the concern.
peace. "

" think what she ate yesterday...go back and look what was in everything she ate...i know big pain in the butt! see if things have things in common in the foods (such as preservatives) cut back on each food she has been eatting for the past several days one at a time. this is a process of elimination, i do this a lot and quite often if i may say so. the allergy could be anything...did you use new detergent? a new soap? was she bit by a bug? has she eaten anything new? has her environment changed? hives are really no biggy unless they get worse by the minute and spread, or if she is having trouble breathing. if this happens give her a dose of benydryl and get her to a hospital! you can use calydryl for the itching or aveno oatmeal bath. cortizone cream or hydrocortizone is also excellent!
good luck! "
