Got my blood work back and my good cholesterol is 30 - should be 60 or higher. The bad is 214 and should be below 200.
Doc gave me a script for cholesterol meds. I have a question, if you take the meds can you eat what you want? Within reason of course. I have always been thin never had to worry about what I ate. I don't eat fast food often and rarely fry things at home. The cholesterol problems run in the family. I can't afford a lot of fresh veggies and fruit, our financial situation right now is horrible. We have to eat cheap, hamburger and chicken are our mainstays. Thanks Posted on 09/16/09, 01:09 pm |

I used niacine to bring my cholesterol down but you have to eat right and too much fat is not good... add as much fruit and veggies as you can... and keep the meat lean and on the chicken side, rather than beef... I dunno about the meds, but common sense says no.. you have to eat a decent diet

Well... I don't feel my diet is horrible and my numbers are not that high, so I guess I was just thinking if I continue to eat the way I do and take the meds my numbers should drop right?
I don't understand the numbers game. So 4 ounces of yogurt has 2% cholesterol, while 4 ounces of ice cream has 4%. What total % can you have each day? When an item says it has a certain percentage of cholesterol is that automatically the bad kind? If you eat say speghetti sauce with hamburger in it - what how much cholesterol is in that? I will try and eat better but it sure would help to have some kind of guideline to know how much I am getting each day.

My doc told me my good cholesterol recently was 38 and my bad was 68. My tri was 168. Your good should be in the 40s....60 or higher is not good. Bad cholesterol should be 70. Overall should be under 150. Triclesterol should be below 125 I believe.
I take Simvastatin for my meds. I have to maintain fat free diet. No ice cream (which is why my tris is so high), You can eat whatever you like, but in moderation. I can eat a good steak but not every day. Skinless chicken, all the port and lamb and veal I want. Just have to take this med for the rest of my life. My cholesterol problem is past down to me. I stop and cholesterol is up. Once had it as high as 500 overall.

My bad is 147 should be( 65-130 )
Good is 87 ( 40- 60 or higher) Trig. 100 should be (0-150) But my darn total is 254 :( If I can get the bad down mine would be in good shape :) Anyone have any ideas on how to bring it down? High Cholesterol was passed down on my Dad side of the family. Which killed him at 53 years old at 150lbs. So you don't ahve to be over weight to have it.

Right, you don't have to be overweight. Seen to many skinny guys get clogged arteries. Met people with low cholesterol with clogged arteries. And have met people with high cholesterol and clear arteries.
Met people with normal levels of cholesterol with and without plaque problems.
