Hi everyone. I went to the doctor today and he checked my cholesterol and my HDL cholesterol was 25, too low and my LDL was 177! Back in Dec. my HDL was 41 and my LDL was 120. I don't know why it went up so much. I watch what I eat. I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes last July and have lost 40 lbs. So I've been eating healthy, so I thought. So he prescribed pravastatin 40mg once a day. Does anyone else take this and how is it working for them? Also are you having any side affects from this medication? My dad just passed away in Feb. from a heart attack. Autopsy showed his arteries were 80 % blocked, so this has me very concerned. Thank you for all your help. God bless.

" Hi and welcome to DS.

I can't take any of the Rx drugs for high LDL. If I don't ache everywhere, I get severe constipation. And more fatigue, which I don't need since I already have CFS.

I had blood work last week, and I will find out next week if something my compounding pharmacist recommended helped lower my LDL. Even if it's just a few points in the right direction, as I've only been on it since April-ish.

My appointment with the doc is next Tuesday, I hope to be back with good news.

There are lots of alternatives out there to Rx's but they don't always work. If you have a compounding pharmacy near you, you can ask them what they are. "

" Hi, I'm new here too.

I took Pravastatin (Pravachol) for a few months and it made my back ache and made me lethargic and tired. I've tried all the other statins with either limited success or similar symptoms.

I'm currently off of all statins and taking only no-flush niacin. I will start working out soon (my back was too sore to do that) soon as well as try alternatives to statins. I plan on seing a naturopath to help me with this.

Best of luck to you. "

" i take pravachol, 40 mg. daily. It has helped to bring down the numbers but i'm not happy with them. I'm in the process of trying to decide what to do. My Rx is running out. I was thinking about seeing a cardiologist instead of internist to see if that would help control choles.
My internist is an exercise person and keeps pushing that. I do keep active but the numbers were still climbing. I have not had any side effects that i'm aware of . "

" My cardiologist has prescribed all sorts of statins for me and I had trouble with each one. Now I'm not taking anything for it. He doesn't seem inclined to go the natural route with me for some reason. But if your side effects are tolerable then stick with the medication. "
