I am just wondering the group's advice on drinking and taking zocor. When I was at my doctor's appt, I told him I probably drink 1-2 drinks/day. Which means, I don't drink every day, maybe 2-3 on a weeknight and 7-10 on one weekend night. Anyone have any experience with this? Any advice would be great as I am new to this!
Thanks in advance! Posted on 07/08/08, 12:07 pm |

I have been taking zocor ever since it first came out. I have been drinking wine all these years, mostly every day - 2-3 glasses per day. I am fine. Have not had any liver problems from it, so I guess I am a lucky one. My doctor knows that I drink wine. Good luck and I think you can be fine!

Are you taking units of alcohol, Dan?
When I first went on simvastatin (Zocor), I was takan off it because of the adverse effect on my liver. I have sinced gone back on the statin but my cholesterol is still on the high side so my GP will not increase the statin level I am taking. I don'tr drink every night but I confess that some nights I sip the red wine and forget to stop! Have you started on the Zocor, Dan? If you have, your doctor should be monitoring your liver function with regular blood tests anyway.

I have a follow up appointment set for 6 weeks to do a follow up blood test. I started the Zocor last Monday.
I don't drink every night, either. Usually only twice a week, but like you, sometimes it is tough to stop!

The alcohol consumption can sometimes increase with the stress so try not to stress(not good at following my own advice)
You should be fine and the test in 6 weeks time should let your Dr know how your liver is coping with the statin. You may wish to consider taking a supplement of Co-Enzyme Q10 (I will neither recommend nor dismiss) because some people experience joint pains with statins. If the statin is affecting your liver, it will show up on your blood test and, if necessary, your doctor will discuss your options with you.

If red wine is supposed to be good for you anyway and you drink moderately I would not worry. You should be having blood work done anyway, so keep an eye on it. I drink too, white not red and have not had trouble. In fact I think the few drinks I have help me all over..helps release the stress. Moderatio is the key.
