What a combination but they work lowering the Cholestrol...
My Doc said eating two small dill pickles, two tbs of flax seed on or in stuff and 300mg of Niacin(non-flushing kind) per day will lower Cholestrol by 20%...I and my sister started doing this three months ago and we were high the Cholestrol for her was 278 mine was 218 now hers is 190 and mine is 180... And if you have high blood pressue like i do with salt for what ever reason I can't explaine it but maybe using them together does NOT raise my blood pressure up having the small dill pickles. But all must be eaten in the same day to work.. Posted on 10/27/07, 02:10 pm |

The doc said something about the vinegar in the dill pickles helps lower the cholestrol and blood sugars too. No matter what the reason or how it works, it just works well to lower the cholestrol.

I just started on Niaspan 500mg, then will be on 1000mg in 4 weeks. I was told to take a Baby Aspirin 20 minutes before the Niaspan to help decrease the possibility of flushing.
NiaSPAN is supposed to be Non-Flushing, but my doc said there is no such thing as a total non-flushing one...if you flush, you know it's working. I am on Zocor 40mg as well, and I take Omega 3-6-9 pills 1 tab three times a day. My triglycerides were higher this time.

Flutterof you always have good information, its so nice that you pass it on. I take garlic
Lecithin is also real good. My sisters was high, she took garlic and lecithin, her doctor ask what she had done to bring it down? She told him, he told her to keep it up, that it was working great, and was going to tell his patients about it.

This is my first post here, so if what I am saying has been said before, I apologize.
Last year when I had my Cholesterol checked it was high--256 and my triglycerides were 139. The highest they have been in my life. My sister had been on Lipitor and it made her so weak that she could hardly get out of bed, so I knew that if possible, I did not want to take a statin for the rest of my life. I did research and found information on controlling Cholesterol more naturally. The main thing that kept coming up was Niacin, vinegar and flax taken together (I add cinnamon--will explain why in a minute). So I talked to my Dr. about trying the Niacin idea first instead of statins. She quickly agreed, then told me that Niacin is excellent for controlling cholesterol--but drug companies don't make much money on Niacin! She also told me do NOT use time released (can affect the kidneys) nor non-flushable niacin if I bought it over the counter because non-flushable has been associated with strokes. (However she said that one particular type was okay, but she couldn't remember what it was at the time--oh well!) She told me start off with 50mg pills and as I got used to them, to go up 50 each week until I reached 1500mg per day. By doing that, the flushing wasn't bad at all. Also, I take an aspirin about 30 minutes before the Niacin. That also helps the flushing--but really the flushing isn't bad. It feels like a sunburn with "pricklies" for about 15-20 minutes, then it's over. Since Niacin has a tendency to raise blood sugar, I also take vinegar, flax (or triscuits crackers) and cinnamon each day as those products help to lower blood sugar. I am not diabetic, but borderline, so it is very important that I take the other "stuff" along with the vinegar. Once I reached the 1500 mgs, I continued for three months at that level and then had my cholesterol checked again. Without ANY change in diet (and I live in the south where we fry almost everything!), my triglycerides had dropped from 139 to 76 and my Cholesterol was down from 256 to 228! Also, my blood sugar is lower and so is my blood pressure! I think that all doctors should tell their patients about Niacin. It works better than most statins, is safer for most people and is VERY easy on the pocketbook! The Coronary Drug Project, an extensive evaluation of cholesterol-lowering drugs showed that niacin was the only cholesterol-lowering agent that actually reduced overall mortality! I know that I have become a strong supporter and believer! This is a great article for more information! http://www.diabetesandcholesterol....

I'll be buying the dill pickle today, something tasty that's actually good for us! Not too sure about the Niacin, read about quite a few side effects which put me off trying. Would be good to hear if its worked for others.

Are there other side effects than those I covered in my post? (raised blood sugar, liver/kidney damage) Those can be controlled by using the right kind of Niacin and dill pickles--or vinegar in various foods or taken alone, flax (or triscuit crackers), and cinnamon. BTW, I also plan to add Welchol. I will be talking to my Doctor about it at the next visit. Below is a link to some information on it. It is in a diabetic forum, but if you read the actual article, you will see that it helps control both sugar and LDLs with NO known adverse affects.
