Had yearly check-up and triglyceride level was 666 (bad number). Was put on Gemfibrozil 600mg 2x a day. After about a week, broke out in a really bad rash. Was taken off and told to exercise and diet. NO SWEETS... Does any one have any ideals on a good menu plan...I am not good at putting the right foods together and I really need to find something I can really stick to. Thanks...Jana

hmmm no sweets? My doctor told me cut out red meat, fast food, pizza (I rarely eat pizza, but she assumed) and dairy. She didn't say anything about sweets. I wrote the specific dietary changes she had me make in one of my journal entries if you want more details, but that's the basics of what I'm doing. I do actually plan to cut processed sugars out of my diet once I get used to my current changes, but first things first and that's going to be a HARD one for me I have a major sweet tooth.
I recommend shopping at Sprouts and Trader Joes tho... and Whole Foods if you can afford it has meal planning classes.

oh and exercise is such a personal thing, but I'm looking into yoga, and I found water aerobics to be very helpful. Depends on your level of ability, I'm barely able to keep up with the arthritis class due to my fibromyalgia. Everyone's different, a friend of mine took up roller blading, another took up hiking and biking... cuz we believe if you find what you enjoy, you're more likely to stick with it.

I eat sugar free low fat milk pudding to calm the sweets/chocolate monster. I also eat lots of stir fries that use as many fresh veggies i can get or frozen if in a hurry with thin slices of chicken, beef or whatever I have and i serve it over lots of rice. I know it should be brown rice but the stuff tastes yucky and why spend money on something I won't eat. I don't fastfood either, when i do get takeout it is usually a made to order deli sandwich using the lowest fat cheese and leanest meat. Yes, sugar can make the fat cling to the arteries...i was told not knock them out too but it was explained why to me by my ortho surgeon of all people. I still drink milk, just 1 percent and non fat no suagr yogurt and low fat cottage cheese. Never ben a big cheese eater except mozarella on the pizza or lasagne but i rarely eat that anymore either. As for meal planning, it can be hard....I have seen gazillions of weigth watchers cookbooks and other diet cookbooks for a buck or 2 at the thrift stores.

I used to have Triglycerides of 1,040. Thats not a typo. Yet I ate healthier than my friends. I went on strict diet and exercise. I was able to lower them to 400.
Later my hypothyoidism was discovered. Upon taking thyroid hormone my triglycerides dropped 800 points in only 30 days. My cholesterol also dropped 100 points in the same 30 days on thyroid hormone. But if there is no metablic disorder, then avoiding simple sugars is the fastest way to drop Triglycerides from what I have been reading. Have a great day!
