advice regarding Symvastatin

I have been taking Symvastatin for about 4 weeks now and am having joint aching.......all of my joints ache all day and most of the evening. i asked my doctor for a blood test because on my bottle it says to have a blood test done 4-6 weeks after starting on the med. I would like other''s feedback if they have had similar symptoms as mine. I haven't heard back from my doctor yet and I suspect he will have me have the blood test done. I am just curious if others have experienced the same or similarly.

" I have just found your post and I am on Simvastatin also. I have noticed joint pain, even small joints like toes and fingers. I didn't relate it to the medication because I was thinking maybe arthritis was getting worse. I don't know. But I've been on Simvastatin since Oct. 2007. "

" I just started on symvastatin 4 months ago. I just had blood work taken yesterday to check for liver function and to see if it's working on my cholesterol. I had been on lescol for 7 years and it worked great...but my insurance didn't want to pay for it anymore. I have not experienced and joint pain but I have noticed an increase in back pain...but I have had that off and on for years so i dont think they are connected. "

" I would advise you to take a supplement of Co-Enzyme Q10 but, if the joint pains persist, you must go back to your doctor for a blood test to check for muscle inflammation because some people have adverse reactions to simvastatin "

" No, I have not experienced this. But I have heard a lot about others having your same experience, so be sure to get your blood test. Good luck! "

" Had horrid reaction to simsvastatin when i switched from Crestor due to cost. Awful cramping in feet numbness etc...doctors told me it wasn't from simsvastatin but pharmacist said it might be..quit using the stuff..getting a bit better...I used the simsvastatin for about 1 month...now I have nerve damage in my feet but no one wants to ascribe it to the simsvastatin (doctors cover for each other's mistakes) "

" 8 months ago I was switched from Lipitor to Simvastatin & began experiencing severe pain in both hips at night & was unable to sleep. Also I had a 12 pound weight gain with no change from my daily routine. I stopped taking Simvastatin 6 weeks ago and most of the pain has subsided. I now am back on Lipitor which makes my legs ache, but is tolerable. I exercise 3 days a week, walk a mile daily, eat sensibly, and the 12 pounds remain. Is there any drug for cholesterol without the side effects that I experience? "

" Quite by accident I found I should not be taking simvistatin or any other statins. My dr sent me to a ra dr instead of an ortho and he decided my ahces and pains were caused by the statins. My CK level was more than double the normal number so they had me go off the statin and sure enough my ck level dropped. My dr put me on Zetia which was very expensive and did not do a thing to keep my cholesterol levels where they shoudl be. Instead they got worse. I changed drs and he put me on gemfibrozil (lopid) and added niacin to the mix and my numbers started dropping. My good cholesterol also came up. It works a different way than the statins. The pharmacist told me "a statin is a statin" no matter which one. The aches and pains I had originally complained from still did not go away as i had ortho type of arthritis and not RA. BUT I am not now subject to the high ck level which causes the muscle degeneration statins can cause in people who cannot tolerate it. My liver function is just fine too, have blood tests done every 3 months and in between times i am a blood donor and I get cholesterol results done free so i can monitor it that way too. "
