Non-prescription Ways to Lower Cholesterol

Hi Everyone. I'm new to this community and have high cholesterol. I'm only 30 and it runs in my family. Over the past year I have changed my diet, added oatmeal daily, lost weight and added exercise as well. My cholesterol went down some, but is still 220. My LDL is very high. The doctor suggested I could add a low dose (10mg) of Lipitor, but I just don't know if I want to do that since I'm only 30. Also, I found out it will be $80 per month with my insurance plan to be on it. How expensive! I was wondering what else has worked for all of you. I have seen yogurt supplements on the market and read info on Omega 3 supplements. Do any of these help? If so, what dose of Omega 3 is best? Is there a certain brand that is best? Are there any other options you have found successful? Should I just take the Lipitor with my family history? Thanks so much for your help!

" I am looking for the same answers too. I take abt 1,000 mgs omega 3 a day, I believe. I am not sure if that is correct amount. Im addition to high cholesterol, my tricy. are high as well , like over 350. My psychiatrist/therapist said i should be on Crestor. I am trying to do it naturally first. "

" since 1996, I have been on Niacin, Zocor, Lipitor, Provocal and now Zetia. I've had side effects with all. My doc says if I want to go Natural, I should take Red Yeast Rice but I should still take the Zetia. I'm taking the RYR but have cut down on Zetia, take one every other day and will eventually cut it out altogether and hopefully the RYR and diet & exercise will do it. My Cholesterol is 181. "

" lenox62 - How do you take Red Yeast Rice? Is it in pill form? I've never heard of it. I just started taking a small dose of Niacin (100mg). I wonder if I can take both supplements at once. Where do you purchase your RYR? Thanks for the advice! "

" You can find RYR at Walgreens or any health food store. I get mine at Walgreens or GNC. It comes in capsule form, 600mg, there's 120 capsules in a bottle. You might ask your doc or Pharmacist if it can be taken with Niacin. "

" I talked with a pharmacist yesterday regarding the trouble I am having with my cholesterol. He gave me the info about a capsule called Lovaza. It is a highly concentrated omega3 compound in a capsule. I cannot take Lipitor or any other statin. Simvastatin, which I took after Lipitor due to cost, worked well for the cholesterol but did other unkind things to me so I do not take them. I am going to talk to my dr about this Lovaza to see what she thinks, also thinking of the niacin based med. Gotta do something. "
