Hi..I'm 38 years old and have always had extreme anxiety everytime I go to any kind of doctor. Sometimes my readings will just be sligtly elevated but other times they will be through the roof..just depending on the level of anxiety and how long I was given to relax before they came at me with the cuff. My readings at home are always in the normal range. I was just wondering if anyone else went through this. It is like I have developed a phobia of all doctors and most definately the blood pressure monitor. I wish I knew why I get so worked up about this. I wish there was something I could do to just snap out of it..but it's just not that easy. The other day I was at the dermatologist where you're usually safe from not having to get your BP taken and sure enough here they come wanting to take my vitals..my bp was 144/99 and my pulse jumped up to 136!! A few weeks before that I had to go to the emergency room for a spider bite and I was flippin out so bad on the inside that my bp was 165/105..Now... if I was calm as a cucumber and my reading was that high..I'd for sure have bp issues....but my readings are always high at the doc's office because I am basically having a panic attack the whole time I'm there...so far readings at home are normal and I always take 3 readings with me to every appt. just in case I need to pull em out. Any tips for overcoming this would be greatly appreciated or if you experience this..let's talk together please.

" I have to do check up with my doctor every 4 months, this will be atleast one hour waiting for the doc to call you and with all the persons inthere talking about their worst experiences living with high blood pressure.
For the time i'm in the office of the doctor my blood pressure is all the way on the top. "

" Definitely get your doctor to set you up with an ambulatory 24-hour monitor if your blood pressure shoots up at the doctor's. Mine is consistently around 150/100 or more at the doctor's (even if I feel calm) but comes down to about 130/85 on an ambulatory monitor. Actually my last ABPM average daytime systolic was around 125. Yes, my diastolic is still too high (and it stays too high overnight too), but the ABPM proves that there is one less number to worry about!

I have a co-existing condition which means that the docs want to keep my BP consistently around the 80 mark. Some drugs I have tried have made it shoot upwards!

" I suffer from whitecoat syndrome too. It usually takes me years before I can get a normal bp reading from a new doctor. Whenever I change my health plan and I have to change doctors the anxiety begins and I know here we go again. My bp is even worse at the gynocologist. It's been as high as 174/114. Crazy huh. But after I leave the doctor Im fine. I have been on a 24 hr blood pressure monitor and my blood pressure was fine. I take it at home and I am fine. But the doctor says I have to be on medication because my blood pressure skyrockets in minutes. I am very much into spirituality so I started reading books that help to still me while I am in the waiting room at the doctors or I will take my IPOD and play meditative music and I keep it on my ears until the doctor comes in to take my pressure. It puts me in a tranquil state. I find these two things have helped me tremendously. Plus knowing the doctor a couple of years has helped too. My blood pressure is normal when I go to her these days at 120/80. But I always have to do a head trip to get myself there. You have to figure out what helps to calm and still you and you need to be in that state when you are at the doctors. I have a mantra now which I say to myself, I do not have a blood pressure problem. Figure out what will work for you. You are not the only one with this problem. "
