Hi..I'm 38 years old and have always had extreme anxiety everytime I go to any kind of doctor. Sometimes my readings will just be sligtly elevated but other times they will be through the roof..just depending on the level of anxiety and how long I was given to relax before they came at me with the cuff. My readings at home are always in the normal range. I was just wondering if anyone else went through this. It is like I have developed a phobia of all doctors and most definately the blood pressure monitor. I wish I knew why I get so worked up about this. I wish there was something I could do to just snap out of it..but it's just not that easy. The other day I was at the dermatologist where you're usually safe from not having to get your BP taken and sure enough here they come wanting to take my vitals..my bp was 144/99 and my pulse jumped up to 136!! A few weeks before that I had to go to the emergency room for a spider bite and I was flippin out so bad on the inside that my bp was 165/105..Now... if I was calm as a cucumber and my reading was that high..I'd for sure have bp issues....but my readings are always high at the doc's office because I am basically having a panic attack the whole time I'm there...so far readings at home are normal and I always take 3 readings with me to every appt. just in case I need to pull em out. Any tips for overcoming this would be greatly appreciated or if you experience this..let's talk together please.

" Hi Erica, I could write a book about my experiences of anxiety induced high blood pressure over the last 20 odd years! Its a long story starting when I had my first child 23 years ago and convinced myself I was going to drop dead from my high blood pressure after she was born. I developed a phobia about my blood prssure over the years until I managed to buy a home monitor and calmed myself enough to get good readings at home. Even so last year I had another episode of panic over readings which kept going higher and higher etc causing more panic! I just wish there had been a support group like this 23 years ago when I needed it - I am sure the reassurance of knowing I wasnt the only one would have helped and prevented me from developing full blown panic attacks over it!
So cutting a long story short - you are not the only one and it is possible to take it without going into full panic mode (even if it has to be at home - I never get good readings at the doctors!) Wishing you good luck x "

" Hi Erica,

I get this too...my anxiety was so severe at the DR one time they almost admitted me...

Youre not alone...it is a annoying and scary.

I take a Xanax before I goto the DR anymore...do some deep breathing, and its better, but not great still...

Good luck!! "

" Add me to list. I dread going to the docter even if its just for a cold. I start feeling anxious the night before and sitting in the waiting fromm is awful; my heart starting pounding and I feel dizzy. My bp once got to 200/115 at the docters office, but went down to 155/ 101. At home Im pretty normal. I always take my monitor to the docter's so they can see its accurate and see what my readings are at home. "

" Yep, add me to the list. I have avoided going to the dr. for years just because of the bp check. My internist lets me take my bp at home - my machine has a printer, and I can print it and bring it with me.

He will usually sneak the cuff on at some point, with quiet reassurances the whole time - and it's usually not so bad. I love my internist, he knows me so well and is so patient with me.

I would second the recommendation of taking something before going to your visit - I take an Ativan before going, it helps so much.

Wouldn't it be great if they still made home visits? My bp reading would be so much better lying in my own bed! "

" Sonya...thank you...I do have some ativan so maybe I can try that. JokeyJ, I am the same way..I am amazed when people say they are going to the Dr. and they say it with ease..and they go for things I'd never go for..like toe fungus or something...I'm not gonna torture myself for some toe fungus...B.Mason..sounds like all of my trips...Valph..the readings at home are helpful...the Dr. coming to your house does sound like a good idea..except for I'd still probably let my imagination get the best of me...I do appreciate all of the comments on here..it makes me feel so much better...I wish I had some nearby friends who were like me..so we could just all go to the doctor together and freak out together.
